Private Instruction- Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion
CMS offers private lessons for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students. Instruction is individually designed to meet each student’s needs and is offered in cooperation with the public/private/parochial school programs. Students will be challenged to improve their skills as well as to grow in general understanding of the world of music. During each semester, students will participate in an informal Performance Class/Recital where they will share their music with other students, family, and friends. Coaching for Instrumental Ensembles
The Ensemble Class is a small group playing experience. Students may elect to form their own ensemble with friends, or be placed in an appropriate ensemble by the CMS staff. This is a great opportunity to have fun and experience music making together with friends. A Performance Class/Recital will be offered during each semester.
Instrumental Music Instruction for the Younger Child
KLARI KIDS TM is a unique program for younger children (1st – 4th grades) and introduces the younger child to the world of instrumental music. The weekly lessons will include instruction on the basics of music notation, rhythm, and ear training as well as learning to play music on a small-sized clarinet (Kinder Klari). When the student enters 5th grade, transfer can easily be made to the full-sized clarinet or to a different band instrument of choice. References from students who have completed the KLARI KIDS TM program are available upon request.
Enrichment Classes in Theory and Music History
Since Music Theory and History represent basic musical knowledge and enhance the skills learned in private instruction, formal instruction in music theory will be included in all CMS private lessons. Also, each CMS student will have the opportunity to attend one music history enrichment class each semester. This class will focus on the life and music of specific composers. There will be no additional charge for this opportunity for students enrolled in CMS lessons.
Private Lessons for Adults
Private lessons are available for the beginning adult student with no previous playing experience as well as for the adult who wants to “refresh” playing skills from previous years. These adult students may be interested in joining the UNI New Horizons Band as their playing skills improve.
UNI New Horizons Band
The UNI New Horizons Band (NHB) welcomes anyone around age 50 and older who is interested in taking group lessons and/or playing in the band. The band includes beginners as well as those who already play an instrument or want to try a new instrument. Group lessons are Tues. & Thurs. mornings 8:00-8:50 a.m., followed by NHB rehearsals 9:00 – 9:50 a.m. UNI Children's Choir
The University of Northern Iowa Children's Choir (UNICC) is a vocal performing ensemble for students in grades three through seven from throughout northeast Iowa. Members rehearse from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings. The choir provides an opportunity for children to further their vocal development and perform high quality concerts.
