Student Employment & Internships

The UNI Museums promote work experience and job training for students. This can be done through internships, independent study, undergraduate research, directed work study, or volunteering. The positions listed below are filled on a regular basis throughout the academic year. A listing of all the Museums financially-assisted student employment opportunities can be found through the University of Northern Iowa Financial Aid Office.

Collections Technician

Technicians assist with various projects in the Museums' collections such as cataloging, researching, exhibiting, or storing objects. Students with coursework in geology, biology, anthropology, or history should apply. Contact Kim Taylor, Museum Collections Manager, at 273-6923.

Education Assistant

Assisting the Education Coordinator, students develop and present programs to elementary school groups, both at the Museum and area schools, as well as assist with special programming and events at the University Museum and Marshall Center School. This position is appropriate for students having experience with children and coursework in geology, biology, anthropology, or history. Contact Diane Schupbach, Museum Education Coordinator, at 273-3276.

Museum Store Assistant

Students with a background in design or merchandising, or previous experience in sales/display, will enjoy selecting merchandise to order and arranging it in sales displays. You will also assist with online merchandising. Contact Doris Mitchell, Museum Secretary, at 273-2188.

Public Relations Assistant

Public relations and communication skills are used in writing press releases and developing promotional pieces for events, and developing activities and special events. Prior experience or coursework in public relations and/or communications, as well as proficiency in QuarkXPress, Adobe InDesign, and/or Adobe Illustrator are required. coordination of publicity for the Museum, including media contact, press releases, and feature stories

EARTH SCIENCE
cataloging of paleontology specimens
analysis of petrology collection

EDUCATION
design and delivery of educational programs for children and adults
development of traveling educational trunks for regional schools

ANTHROPOLOGY
analysis and storage of archaeology collection
curatorial analysis of specific objects

LEISURE SERVICES
visitor survey development & evaluation

VARIOUS DISCIPLINES
