UNI Museums to host hair braiding talk
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Museum will host "Hair Braiding in Ghana," a presentation by Evelyn Boateng, UNI College of Education doctoral student, at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 8, at the University Museum, located at 3219 Hudson Road, Cedar Falls.
Boateng's lecture will include demographic information on Ghana and will focus on braiding styles common to the Yoruba tribe in West Africa, as well as hairstyle types and patterns found in contemporary African/Ghanaian society. Attendees will be able to observe braiding demonstrations and will learn about the different hairstyles chosen by men and women and by girls and boys.
"Evelyn's presentation is a wonderful addition to our exhibit programming," states Romney Hall, public affairs coordinator for the UNI Museums. "The skill and time required to create some of these 'hair sculptures' is so impressive. They are truly works of art."
"Hair Braiding in Ghana," is being presented in connection with the University Museum's current featured exhibit, "Body Art: Adornment Across Cultures," on display now through Dec. 28.
Admission to the museum and lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit www.uni.edu/museum or call (319) 273-2188.
