UNI Museums to host its annual family fun day
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa Museums will host "Fancy Fingers, Fancy Faces!" from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 27, at the University Museum, 3219 Hudson Rd, Cedar Falls. This Family Fun Day event is just $5 per family, and pre-registration is requested by calling the museum at (319) 273-2188 by Oct. 24.
"Fancy Fingers, Fancy Faces!" is being held in conjunction with the University Museum's featured exhibit, "Body Art: Adornment Across Cultures," on display now through Dec. 28. The exhibit focuses on global and local concepts of beauty and methods of adornment, including body painting, piercing, tattooing, scarification, and hairstyling.
"Fancy Fingers, Fancy Faces!" will bring body adornment to life for museum visitors, and families are invited to play and stretch their creativity with a host of fun, educational activities and crafts. Different stations will be set up throughout the museum, and participants of all ages will be able to create their own unique hand puppets and masks, to learn some easy Halloween disguise tricks, and to experiment with face and fingernail painting. Temporary tattoos, including the use of henna, will be featured, as will various hairstyling techniques.
Diane Schupbach, education coordinator for the UNI Museums, states that
"Visitors will begin to question their own ideals and conceptions of beauty and will, hopefully, gain an expanded acceptance of what it means to be beautiful. They'll see that the world is full of beautiful people, and that they come in all shapes, sizes, and colors."
