Let's see - if we can represent one dog in Canis Minor with one small line, then one longer line represents two dogs - and that's exactly what we have here. Two hunting dogs, who are often shown chasing the bears, is what Canes Venatici shows. This is obviously not so obvious, but at least there is a relatively bright star in it that helps mark its location. The fact that it is so close to the Big Dipper also helps to find it, though it is sort of hard to see when the dipper is low to the horizon. The best time to see Canes Venatici is spring through summer.
