For the 43rd consecutive year, the

Program Site:
Angers is the capital of the Anjou region. Its metropolitan area
has a population of about 270,000. A dynamic and youthful city,
Angers has many student residents, thanks to its two universities.
With its impressive 13th-Century castle and numerous museums,
Angers is of great historical and artistic interest. Originally
located on the road to Santiago de Compostela, the city
remains an important religious center.
Angers and its region offer a unique cuisine from the terroir
using fresh products from the Loire valley. Les Jardins de la
France, as the area is known, is famous for its vineyards, its
flowers, and orchards as well as its vegetable gardens.
Theater lovers will appreciate the Festival d'Anjou held
yearly during the month of July. Many of today's famous French movie
stars participate in this festival.
Every weekend surrounding towns hold celebrations such as Brissac
and its Fête des vins d'Anjou et des Rillauds, Doué-la-Fontaine
and its renowned Festival de la Rose. Basically everyone
should be able to find something to his or her liking.
Angers has been selected as one of the French cities with the
highest quality of life. It is located in the heart of the Loire
castle country, only an hour and a half from Paris by TGV and one
hour from the city of Nantes and its surrounding beaches.
Due to its proximity to the ocean, Angers enjoys a temperate and
pleasant climate. Public transportation makes the city extremely
accessible.

PURPOSE The Institute program is designed for those teachers: 1)
who need intensive training in understanding and speaking French even though not
necessarily pursuing an MA in French;
and 2) who do not wish to see
France as tourists, but who would like
to live among the French people and make personal contacts with
French families in a French community. The most important aim of
the Institute is to try to increase each individual's skills as
much as possible in a congenial French atmosphere and to help the
participants assemble first-hand information about France and its
people.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- A Bachelor's Degree or its equivalent
- All participants must be admitted as graduate students by the University
of Northern Iowa and are required by the Iowa Board of Regents to
sign the following forms: Health Insurance Verification, Waiver of
Liability and Conditions of Participation. These will be sent to
registered participants before departure. There are three pages
in all. You can view or print them in
Acrobat as a .pdf file or in
MS-Word as a .doc file.
- If you intend to pursue an MA degree with us, please also see
Graduate College admission
requirements and
departmental admission requirements. An application for graduate admission
is automatically included in our application packet for new participants.
ENROLLMENT
Enrollment will be limited; therefore early application
is advised.
A word about last minute registrations: We frequently receive inquiries shortly
before the beginning of the program from students wanting to know if they can
still register. While we do not have a calendar date application deadline, we
close registration when we have reached the maximum number of participants we
are able to serve. This has happened as early as January and registration is
traditionally closed for all programs at least by a month before departure.
Even if the program is not full, last minute registrations are usually not
possible: All participants MUST be admitted to UNI graduate studies before
they can be registered, and no admission decision can be made until all
required official transcripts have been sent directly by your institution(s)
to the UNI Registrar’s Office. (See eligibility requirements.)
CREDITS The Institute offers
six semester hours of graduate credit upon satisfactory completion
of the program. These credits are transferable or may be applied
to any of the M.A. programs available at UNI.
UNI offers the M.A. in French,
the Two-Language M.A. in French and Spanish or German, and the M.A. in

COST OF THE PROGRAM
The cost for the program is tentatively set at $4,650 if signing up before January 15, 2010 (it is $4,850 if signing up after that date). This
includes tuition for 6 semester hours of graduate credit, board and

programs sponsored by the French Institute.
Final payment is due by April 15, 2010. Participants can apply for federally-insured loans.
The application
for
financial aid should begin four months prior to the program starting date and
applicants must be
classified as degree-status students.
For all of our former participants, the opportunity to live with
a French family, to feel welcome in France from the very outset,
was an invaluable experience. They left France with a warm feeling
for the French people and their hospitality, and with a real sense
of accomplishment in their ability to understand and speak French.
If you wish, we would be happy to send you a list of recent
participants who have given us written permission to release their names to
potential new participants.
We hope that this early announcement will give you enough time
to study our program carefully, to get in touch with some former
participants, and to review your personal plans in the coming
months. We hope to see you in Angers.
