Welcome! Bienvenue! Willkommen! Bienvenido!
The Department of Modern Languages at the University of Northern Iowa prides itself on preparing students for teaching and non-teaching positions in today's world. With courses in French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish,
students are given considerable orientation toward the target cultures, both by assuring the presence on campus of native speakers and by offering a series of overseas and on-campus study programs.
French, German, Spanish and Russian are the languages in which students can attain either a major or a minor. A minor also may be earned in Portuguese. Other majors include TESOL/Modern Lanuages and intercollegiate European, Inter-American, and Russian Area Studies. Additionally, students can acquire program certificates in the three
area-studies fields, translation and any of the languages offered as an identifiable skill.
Assistantships are available to graduate students in French, German and Spanish.
Students may wonder "Why study another language?" Foreign languages give added knowledge about other cultures, traditions and lifestyles; they offer numerous opportunities to see the world and it makes you a more desirable candidate for jobs in nearly any profession. Need more reasons?
