Integration Bee

The Integration Bee is an annual competition sponsored by the UNI Math department. Undergraduate students and local high school students compete to evaluate integrals in a spelling bee format. It is a fun event which occurs in April each year.

Scholarships

There are several scholarship opportunities for incoming and continuing mathematics majors. These scholarships and information about the application process are listed below.

To apply for any of these scholarships, go to www.uni.edu fill out the Common Scholarship Application for Undergraduates form. Check there for deadline dates of scholarships which are typically in January and early February.

Mathematics Alumni Scholarships
Last year one $1500, one $1000, and one $500 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be an undergraduate major, in any field of mathematics and have completed at least 30 credit hours of work at UNI (including at least 8 credit hours of math with at least one semester of calculus or one math course numbered 140 or above) prior to application. Your online essay should give careful attention to short term and long term professional goals.

The American Society for Quality Control (State University of Iowa Section) Scholarship
Last year one $1000 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be following a course of study appropriate for a career in quality control. Preference is given to members and descendants of members of the American Society for Quality Control (State University of Iowa Section).

Robert E. Allender Mathematics Teaching Scholarship
The Math Department will award one $1000 award to a sophomore, junior or senior full-time student majoring in mathematics teaching with a GPA of 2.5 or above.

Robert W. Bettle and Virginia McShane Bettle Mathematics Education Scholarship
Last year one $1250 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics - Teaching.

John F. and Ruth Cross Scholarship
Last year one $1000 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be a Statistics and Actuarial Science major who will have completed or be participating in an internship at the time of receipt. Preference shall be given to students with internships outside of Iowa.

E.W. Hamilton Scholarship
Last year one $1500 scholarship and one $1200 scholarship were awarded.* The applicant must be enrolled in any program of the department or be an elementary education major with a K-6 math minor. The student must have completed 45 semester hours of college and have completed a minimum of one semester in residence at UNI prior to making application.

Patricia Lange Memorial Scholarship
Last year two $1400 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be a Mathematics major of least junior standing. Preference is given to female students.

Prem Sahai Actuarial Science Scholarship
Last year one $500 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be pursuing a major in Actuarial Science and intend to pursue a career in Actuarial Science. Preference is given to students of Asian Indian origin.

Principal Financial Group Actuarial Scholarship
Last year one $1500 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be majoring in Actuarial Science. Preference will be given to students who have passed at least one SOA/CAS exam.

Augusta Schurrer Mathematics Scholarship
Last year one $1500 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics - Teaching. The student must have completed at least 65 semester hours at UNI with a GPA of a least 3.0. At least 20 of these hours must be in mathematics. Students already receiving a continued scholarship (such as Presidential, Provost, science symposium, etc.) are not eligible.

Sorenson Elementary Mathematics Scholarship
Last year two $2500 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be an elementary education major with a K-6 mathematics minor who shows outstanding promise as a prospective teacher. The applicant must have completed at least 75 credit hours at UNI with a GPA of at least 3.0. The student must also have at least 17 hours of completed work on the elementary mathematics minor with a GPA of at least 3.0. Selection will be made on the basis of scholarship and the potential for success as an elementary or middle school teacher; a short essay on your goals and aspirations for teaching mathematics is part of the application process. Students who graduate in Spring 2008 (or later) are eligible.This scholarship will be awarded Spring 2008 and funds will be credited to the recipients U-bill at that time.

Marcia E. Traer Endowment Scholarship
Last year one $1750 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics the following academic year. The recipient must be employed part-time and preference will be given to female applicants.

Carl and Wanda Wehner Mathematics Teaching Scholarship
Last year two $1300 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics - Teaching who shows outstanding promise as a prospective teacher. Overall GPA and mathematics GPA must be at least 3.0. At least one semester of residency at UNI must have been completed at the time of application. Preference is given to students who intend to teach in Iowa for two years following graduation. The applicant must show financial need.

CNS/Mathematics Scholarships
The Math Department wil award three CNS/Mathematics Scholarships to incoming frshmen (current High School Seniors) worth $3,000 each and we anticipate each scholarship to be renewable for up to three more years, provided that the student makes satisfactory progress toward a bachelor's degree with a major in some area of mathematics. By satisfactory progress, we mean the student must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA over an approved program of study that includes appropriate coursework in mathematics.

Fred W. Lott Scholarship in Mathematics
The Math Department will award $2500 to incoming freshman math majors.

Irvin & Dorothy Brune Math Education Endowed Scholarship
The Math Department will award $1500 to an incoming freshman math education major.

Glenn Boysen Endowed Scholarship
The Math Department will award one $1000 award to an incoming freshman math major.

Marian Rigdon Ponder Math Education Scholarship
The Math Department will award one $1000 scholarship to an incoming freshmen student majoring in math education who demonstrates merit and financial need with preference given to female students.

Alice & George Brown Math Scholarship
The Math Department will award one $1000 scholarship to an incoming full-time freshmen student pursuing a major in mathematics. The student must demonstrate financial need and the scholarship may be renewable for 3 additional years with a 2.5 or higher GPA.

* We anticipate, but cannot guarantee, similar funding this year.

Scholarship recipients will be announced by the end of the Spring 2009 semester. These scholarships will be awarded for the Fall 2009 - Spring 2010 academic year. The funds will be credited to the recipient's U-bill, usually half of the total each semester. To apply for any of these scholarships, go to online scholarship application and fill out the Common Scholarship Application for Undergraduates form before the deadlines listed, (early in 2009).
