The Putnam Exam
The Putnam Exam is the premier mathematics "contest" in the United States. It takes place every year and the UNI Math Department has helped mathematically inclined students work toward taking this challenging exam.

There are many resources available to mathematics students in Wright Hall, including Maple Labs, Student Organizations, and Scholarships available to a wide variety of applicants. Additional resources for students are listed below.
Tutoring
Free tutoring is available to elementary majors for the math courses they take in the Mathematics Education Lab. The tutoring is available on a drop in basis.

The Mathematics Education Lab in Wright Hall, room 209, is a resource that is available to students funded by the Department of Mathematics. The purpose of the Mathematics Education Lab is to provide resources for undergraduates, graduates, area teachers, and the Mathematics Department Faculty.

Free tutoring is available to mathematics majors on a drop in basis in the Math Lab, located in Wright Hall room 338.

- 4 Pentium II 350Mhz Dell Dimension workstations with zip drives and CD
- 1 Pentium 150Mhz Storm Firewall
- Storm Linux 2000 Deluxe donated by Stormix Technologies
- Storm Firewall donated by Stormix Technologies
- These stations run Linux based commercial and open source academic mathematics applications, and are used for mathematics computing research
- The lab is housed on the first CNS experimental LAN segment, behind a Storm Firewall powered by Linux router
Annual Mathematics Competition
Talented UNI mathletes participate in the annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition on the first December of every year. This prestigious competition is open to U.S. and Canadian undergraduates and offers cash prizes of up to $25,000 for the first place team and $2,500 for the top five individuals. Additionally, the UNI Math Dept. offers up to $100 for performance on intercollegiate math exams. Contact the Dr. Theron Hitchman & Dr. Douglas Mupasiri by October 1 to enroll in this year's competition.
