Computer Science Majors

Summary

It is hard to imagine the time when we did our work without the assistance of computers. Today, computers are an integral part of school, home and business life. Students in computer science and computer information systems learn to modify and develop the software that is so important in our professional and personal lives.

Majors:

The B.A. and B.S. in Computer Science and the Computer Information Systems programs offer a flexible curriculum that allow students to specialize in one or more of four areas within computer science: information science, software engineering, systems and traditional computer science. These programs can be completed in three years and have a common first year.

The Bioinformatics program is an interdisciplinary curriculum combining computer science, mathematics, and biology that seeks to explore and elucidate life processes through modern genomic techniques and tools. The Networking and System Administration (NaSA) program prepares graduates for careers and research opportunities in all fields related to reliable and distributed network computing. These programs can be completed in four years.

Facilities

  • The Department of Computer Science is located on the third floor of the recently renovated (2006) Innovative Teaching and Technology Center (ITT/ITTC) with laboratory space in Wright Hall. The classrooms and laboratories are modern and comfortable.

  • Computer science classes use a wide range of hardware facilities and software tools. After completing a major or minor in the Computer Science Department, students will be comfortable using personal computers, workstations, servers and mainframe computers.

  • Many students use their own computers. Often, software for particular courses will be available to students at zero or low cost. In other cases the department, College of Natural Sciences (CNS), or University Information Technology Services (ITS) will have the needed software available in their laboratories. Often, those systems and their software can be accessed over the net.

  • More information about computer systems can be found at the department and CNS home pages, http://www.cs.uni.edu/ and http://www.cns.uni.edu.

Scholarships

College of Natural Sciences offers several four-year scholarships for incoming new freshmen who will major in Computer Science. The department also has several scholarships available mostly to students in their junior or senior years. The department, college and university also hire some students to help support research grants, computing facilities, and instruction.

More information on department scholarships can found at Financial Aid.
