Summary

 

The undergraduate degree programs offered by the Department of Art contribute to the growth of students in ways that are essential to the understanding, practice and appreciation of the visual arts. All students pursuing the B.A. or B.F.A. degree in studio art or the B.A. in art education with a studio emphasis must declare a concentration in one of the following areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, jewelry/metals, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture.

Students who have a desire to develop their creative thoughts, feelings and visual awareness should seriously consider majoring in art at the University of Northern Iowa.

All undergraduate degree options are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

 

Common minors pursued

Students in the Department of Art have complemented their major with minors in modern languages, music, English, communication studies, theatre and industrial technology.

Careers

 

The Department of Art takes great pride in its graduates who have obtained art-related positions in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, New York, Philadelphia, Lincoln, Dallas, Santa Fe and other cities; or who have been accepted to M.F.A. or doctoral programs at leading graduate schools throughout the country.

A recent survey of past graduates has confirmed that a significant number have become highly successful as art educators, art historians, studio artists, photographers, graphic designers, illustrators and museum directors.

Facilities

 

The Kamerick Art Building, which houses all divisions of the Department of Art, was built in 1985. An award-winning structure that is based on an elegant modular plan, it is among the finest and most attractive art buildings in the region. In addition to spacious and well-equipped studios and classrooms, the facility houses a large professional art gallery and a state-of-the-art computer laboratory.

Scholarships

 

The Department of Art provides a number of scholarships to dedicated, talented and academically qualified students. Each year in the spring semester, second-semester freshmen, sophomores and juniors, apply for one-year departmental tuition scholarships. Portfolio review and academic gpa serve as primary evaluation criteria.

Prospective art students may also apply for general UNI scholarships.
