New titles in children's and young adult literature are available for evaluation and study. A lounge adjacent to the Youth Collection features a display of the most recent acquisitions, and an electronic list of New Book Titles-Youth Collection is posted monthly.
Reference questions are addressed by the staff on a regular basis. Priority is given to UNI students and faculty making requests in person, but requests by phone, e-mail, and U.S. mail are addressed as time permits.
Presentations are made to UNI education classes and to other UNI classes focusing on topics related to children's and young adult materials. Presentations may be scheduled by contacting the staff.
Groups planning to visit the Youth Collection need to contact the staff in advance.
Assistance dealing with challenged materials is offered to Iowa schools. Reviews, citations in recommended lists, and other supporting documentation are provided.

Workshop: Children's Literature Update, in Cedar Falls
July 26-27, 1999 (Monday and Tuesday), 1 hr. graduate credit
July 28-29, 1999 (Wednesday and Thursday), 1 hr. graduate credit
OR July 28-31, 1999 (Wednesday through Saturday), 2hrs. graduate credit
The newest of quality literature for children will be presented. For one hour of credit, teachers (K-8) and librarians can receive reviews of works from the different genres. Another optional hour, focusing on individual study, can provide a more in-depth survey. Participants from any of the update workshops will want to return to campus on Saturday, July 31, 1999 to meet well-known children's illustrator, Jerry Pinkney. He is the illustrator of The Talking Eggs, The Patchwork Quilt, Mirandy and Brother Wind, Sam and the Tigers, and John Henry.
Workshop: Children's Literature for Environmental Studies, in Council Bluffs.
August 4-7, 1999 (Wednesday through Saturday), 2hrs. graduate credit
Teachers (K-8) and librarians will be introduced to quality literature for children addressing themes related to the study of the environment. Ben Claussen, emeritus professor of Biology at UNI , will link these experiences with hands-on environmental studies activities. Kristine George, author of The Great Frog Race and Other Poems, Old Elm speaks: Tree Poems, and Little Dog Poems, will share her experiences as a children's poet with the group.
Workshops are conducted by Dr. Jeanne McLain Harms, Professor, Curriculum and Instruction, and Lucille Lettow, Youth Collection Librarian. Registration information is available by contacting UNI's Division of Continuing Education and Special Programs.
