The tree grows from sixty to eighty feet high but may grow to a height of 150 feet. The bark is light gray and scaly. The lumber is highly prized for furniture and other items. North American Indians ate the acorns.

The leaves of this tree have seven to eleven lobes with rounded ends. They measure three to nine inches in length. In autumn the leaves turn pinkish red.
