This tree is commonly seventy to eighty feet high but can grow to be 150 feet tall.

The mostly smooth leaf of the red oak is four to ten inches long. The lobes taper to a pointed tip. The bark of the trunk is dark and furrowed. The lumber is close-grained and highly valued.

The large, round acorns vary in size and shape from tree to tree. They have a shallow cap. Here some of them have been used to create figures representing musicians.
