Using the Student Computer Centers
The Student Computer Centers (SCCs) are managed by the User Services division of ITS
(Information Technology Services). The students have access and use of: word processing, e-mail
and internet access, spreadsheet, database, programming, statistical, and mainframe
software and free black/white laser printing.
UNI students are the primary users of the SCCs. UNI faculty and staff may use the facilities;
however, students take precedence and should the SCC be full, any faculty or staff members
using stations may be asked to leave. Faculty and staff are not to utilize the print capability.
- Choose any available computer.
- Log into the Active Directory at the computer station. (Press Ctrl+Alt+Del)
- Once you are at your computer, select the software you would like from the menu. You may run
your own software, however, you are NOT allowed to add or save anything to the hard drive
so installation of software is not permitted.
- You will need a memory stick (recommended), 3 1/2"disk, or zip disk (only in some SCCs) in order to save your work.
The Microsoft Active Directory Authentication scheme is utilized to allow the users convenient access to computer facilities.
This authentication scheme allows ITS to keep many of the Student Computer Centers open, unattended 24 hours a day.
Logging In:
-
Username: The Log-In screen will prompt you for your UNI Username (your
Username is ONLY the portion before the @ sign in your UNI email address).
- Password: Your initial password is in the format mmdd$nnnnnn. (mm is
the first 2 letters of your birth month, dd is the 2 digit number of your birth
day and nnnnnn is your 6 digit univerity ID#, example: ja01$123456)
- Domain: Will always be AD-ITS
- Auto-logout: After five minutes of inactivity a message appears and
you will then have five additional minutes to click cancel in order to bring you
back to your desktop. If you do not click cancel you will then be logged
off.
There are laser printers in all of the SCCs. These printers are located towards
the front of each SCC, near the assistant's workstation. Print is not free but is funded through
the student computer fee and should be used conservatively. Faculty and staff are not to
utilize the print capability.
Under no circumstances are you allowed to use your own paper when printing in
our SCCs. There are places off campus that will provide this type of service.
All black and white regular laser printing in student
computer facilities of units receiving a computer fee allocation will be paid
for from this fee and students shall not be charged additionally. Each unit
shall monitor printing to assure resources are not wasted.
You are allowed to print only ONE copy of a document. We do not allow printing
multiple copies of documents (i.e. resumes etc.). Use a copy machine to duplicate copies.
The intent of the Free Print Policy in campus computer facilities is to provide for
Academic needs or purposes:
- Personal Writing (class projects, papers, etc.)
- Reasonable amounts of Research/Study documents (40 pages or less per document)
Unacceptable Examples:
- Research/Study documents exceeding 40 pages per document
- Documents using high amounts of print toner (poorly designed documents
such as one Powerpoint slide per page or negative print images)
- Multiple copies for class handouts
- Flyers, etc. for Student Organizations
Suggested Alternatives:
- Read large documents online
- Copy large documents to your own personal computer
- Obtain class documents from print services or copy centers
- Obtain class documents from reserve desk in library
Reports, assignments and other projects may not be left on the computer hard drives and must be saved on removable media. Removable media are not supplied for users of the SCCs. You can buy media in Maucker Union or at the bookstore and memory sticks at the Computer
Consulting Center in ITTC 36. We recommend using a memory stick, or optionally a 3 1/2" high
density diskette or a zip disk. If you are unfamiliar with storing projects on removable media, call the CCC (Computer
Consulting Center) at 273-5555, visit the CCC at ITTC 36, ask the assistant in the SCC, or ask a friend. It is a
very simple procedure that only takes a few minutes. Please note that
there are NO Zip Drives on the newest computers in our labs, as we are trying to
phase them out and encourage the use of USB memory sticks. The following
labs do NOT have Zip Drives: Maucker, Lang, Bridge Lounge, Lawther, and
WRC.If you have lost your media, please contact the SCC where you believe you left it. If we find a lost media, it will be kept in the SCC. The Supervisor of the SCC will contact you by email. The media will
be held in the SCC for 30 days, after which it becomes property of ITS. You must present your UNI ID to the CSA to get your media.
The CSA is in charge of maintaining the daily operation of the SCC and are instructed not to actually do
homework for the users. They are there to help answer your questions, maintain
printing supplies and help with equipment problems. CSAs are not required to have a full knowledge of all the
software packages available in the SCC, but most know at least one software package and will help
answer questions when possible. When the SCCs are busy, it is impossible for the CSAs to
help every person in the SCC with questions. If, for any of these reasons, the CSA is
unable to answer your software questions and problems, call or visit the Computer Consulting
Center (273-5555; ITTC 36). Students using software that is not supported by ITS should see their
instructor for answers to questions.
The ITS Computer Consulting Center is located in Room 36 ITTC Building. It is composed of three main services:
a Telephone Help Line/Desk, Software Consulting, and Documentation. The CCC's function is to
assist students, faculty, and staff with computer problems.
Whether you call the CCC at (319) 273-5555 or walk into ITTC 36, Consultants are available to
assist students, faculty, and staff with their software problems. A wide variety of free
documentation on supported software is available at this location as well. The documentation
also can be found on the ITS User Services web page,
visit http://www.uni.edu/its/us. To find out more about the CCC,
visit http://www.uni.edu/its/us/ccc.
Other services provided include the following:

ITS offers free computer training workshops for a variety of software. The workshops are
instructor-lead seminars with hands-on training. Each week a schedule of computer training
workshops is published in the Northern Iowan. Additionally, a monthly schedule is posted around
campus and on the UNI Web Space. You can see a listing of these by clicking on the training button
or on the ITS Educational Technology web
page (http://www.uni.edu/its/et) or by typing "training" at the dollar sign prompt
while on the Central VMS system. The workshops are free and are usually 2 hours long. To
register for the workshops, simply call ITS Training (273-2309). Information on the World Wide
Web, VMS mail system, Windows computer operating systems, and MS Office are
presented in these workshops.
