UNI - ISP Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. Does this replace the free UNI Modem Pool?
A. No, these internet services provide higher service levels. Many select an outside service provider because they offer a faster and more efficient modem dialup option available as a choice over UNI Modem Pool service.

Q. Are there more modems available than with the UNI Modem Pool?
A. Probably, most service providers must maintain a better ratio of modems to accounts than UNI maintains. Currently the UNI Modem Pool has a ratio of 1 modem to over 50 accounts.

Q. Are other service providers faster than the UNI Modem Pool?
A. Probably, the UNI Modem Pool maximum speed is 28.8kbs while most service providers have 56.6kbs or even higher speeds.

Q. Will there be improvements above the UNI 30 hours monthly limit?
A. Probably, with most service providers there are no limits.

Q. If I live in a dorm, should I signup for this service?
A. Probably not, dorm rooms automatically come with access via RESNET.

Q. If I live in University Apartments, should I signup for this service?
A. No, RESNET does provide service to University Apartments.

Q. Does an outside internet service provide extra Email accounts?
A. Probably, most providers offer 2-4 new addresses plus you retain your UNI Email account.

Q. Can I access the special "reserved software" (Library, etc.) as I can from on campus?
A. Yes, as long as you are a Student, Faculty, or Staff member.
