My Email From Home Is Being Rejected?
PROBLEM:
I'm having a problem sending mail to people with addresses other than @uni.edu This is the error message that the uni server sends back to my Netscape
Messenger AND Outlook Express:
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was (username@domain.name)
Subject '', Account: 'mail.uni.edu', Server: 'mail.uni.edu', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Relaying NOT permitted: (username@domain.name)',
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
This happens with all addresses that do not have a uni.edu extension.
RESPONSE:
If you have the outbound "mail.uni.edu" SMTP server configured correctly
with your UNI Username as the outbound server Username, you should be
prompted for your email password for the first message you send only.
Otherwise, the SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) mail server at UNI is set up to reject "relays". The purpose of not permitting relays is to preserve UNI network
resources for University use. By contacting the UNI mail server using a UNI IP (Internet Protocol) address you could send mail to any domain name. If your IP
address is from an off-campus ISP (Internet Service Provider) you can only send email to [username]@uni.edu and not to any other domains. The work
around solution is to use your ISP's SMTP server for outgoing e-mail. Check with your ISP to for their outgoing mail server name
or check this
