FAQ - Certificate Expired

Whenever I attempt to enter a secure site on the internet (like hotmail or access uni), a box pops up that says: "Unable to establish a secure connection to that address. There is a a problem with the security certificate from that site. The identity certificate has expired. Anything you read or send will be readable by third parties while in transit."

I think it must be something with my computer (an imac) because it does it at more than one internet site.

Is there anything I can do about it?

ANSWER:
From the symptoms you describe it sounds like you are using an outdated version of Netscape Navigator (Ver 4.06 or older). The older web browsers have certificates of identification that expired Dec 31, 1999. This problem does not affect Internet Explorer or Netscape 4.7 or higher which have 10 year expirations on their certificates. The certificates in question are referenced by secure sites. To solve this issue update your web browser.
