Whichever program you use, you will be able to see any messages received with VMS Mail and exchange messages with all of the same people. The main difference is that Pine has additional features and different commands.
When you start Pine, you will notice that there are menu options rather than just a prompt. To use an option select it by moving up and down the menu using your computer's arrow keys and press the Enter key or press the letter displayed on the left of the desired option.
Across the bottom of any Pine window, there is a list of commands you can use. The list changes depending on what you are doing at the time.
One of the options off the main menu (the first menu you see when you start Pine) is Address Book. This is an easy way of saving e-mail addresses and creating mailing lists.
The name, Pine, is an acronym for "Program for Internet News and Email." As the name implies, Pine can be set up to read Usenet newsgroups. To set Pine up as a news reader, select Setup from the Main Menu, the option C for "Configure," and specify news.uni.edu as Pine's nntp-server. Be careful in the setup screens. Careless changes to other setting may cause problems.
Pressing ? from any of a number of Pine's screens will bring up an appropriate help file. Selecting the Help item from Pine's Main Menu will bring up general help for using Pine.
