Northern Iowa Email Software

Email, or electronic mail, enables students, faculty and staff to exchange messages by computers as long as they can connect to a compatible system either by a modem, a network connection, or an internet connection. Email is a fast and effective means of communication. In addition, the user has the capability to send program files and documents by attaching them to their email messages.

Mozilla-Thunderbird (Preferred Desktop/Laptop Client)

The Mozilla-Thunderbird is the preferred supported platform for centrally supported workstations. Also, this type of software is faster, more feature rich, and uses less computer resource than web based software.

The University supports both POP and IMAP secure mail service on the central system.

WebAccess (Preferred WWW Email Access)

The University supports WebAccess (web Email program) service to the central system.

WebMail (Secondary WWW Email Access)

About Email

There are many Email programs available today. The sender and receiver do not need the same kind of mail packages in order to communicate.

In the case of faculty and staff at UNI, email can be sent to an actual Username@uni.edu, or to an easy to remember email "alias"@uni.edu Most aliases at UNI are firstname.lastname@uni.edu .

UNI's mail services are accessible via a connection on a Local Area Network (LAN), or off-campus via modem or Internet connection. Additional software for modem access is available at the ITS-CCC. An email account is provided for students, faculty and staff.

Detailed information on using email programs such as Thunderbird and Outlook Acad is available on the web at this address: http://www.uni.edu/its/us/document/unimail/mozilla.
