ITS Unix accounts reside on the Sun Microsystems machine, SUNNY, and is used for Mail, Usenet News, internet access, World Wide Web publishing and other services.

Setting Up An Account

Students should bring their UNI ID to the ITS Computer Consulting Center in Business Building 27. Faculty and Staff must complete an Application for the account and return it to the Computer Consulting Center. Your account will usually be set up by the next working day. Unix accounts are for registered students, staff, or faculty of UNI. For new students applying before classes begin, accounts are generally opened by the 2nd or 3rd day of classes.

Departmental accounts are also available for publishing documents on the World Wide Web. To set up a departmental account, email Tom.Peterson@uni.edu

Username

Students: Sun Unix account usernames are equivalent to your UNI Username's.  

Example:     Name:  Janet Johnson    	UNI Username:  janetj@uni.edu	SUN account Username:  janetj

Faculty & Staff: Sun Unix account usernames will also be equivalent to your UNI Username's.

Password

The first time you log into the Unix system your password will be your University ID (UID# - no leading zeros). At this stage you must change your password. Passwords must conform to the following rules:

  1. Minimum of 6 characters, maximum of 8.
  2. Must contain at least 1 numeric or special character.
  3. Must contain at least 2 Alphabetic characters.

You should select a password that cannot be easily guessed. Once you use a password, you may not re-use it. You may change your password by typing passwd at the $ prompt. If you forget your password, all Students, Faculty and Staff are required to bring a University ID to the Computer Consulting Center in Business 27 to have the password reset.

Logging In for the First Time

This is a summary of steps used to find the Unix system. A more detailed set of directions on connecting to the UNI computer systems can be obtained by contacting the ITS Computer Consulting Center in Business 27.

  1. Choose one option from this lists, depending on how you connect:
  2. At the login:prompt: Enter your username.
  3. At the Password:prompt: Enter your University ID (UID# - no leading zeros) without spaces or dashes.
  4. At the Choose a new password:message, enter your UID# again when prompted with Enter login password:
  5. At the New password: prompt: Enter a new password, as per the rules stated above.
  6. At the Re-enter new password: prompt: Re-enter the new password.
