Faculty Focus ‘13Intersession Technology Workshops
January 7-11, 2013

Faculty Focus features a number of workshops to assist faculty in learning skills to more effectively integrate technology into teaching and learning. These workshops are offered the week just prior to the beginning of the spring semester. The team from ITS-Educational Technology is available during Faculty Focus week to work with faculty through workshops and consultation.

 

Bb Learn 9 (UNI’s eLearning system) Workshops

  • Transitioning Your Bb Learn 9 Course for the Next Semester
    Copying an existing Bb Learn 9 course for use in subsequent semesters can save time, but you can run into some problems with the course copy process if you’re not aware of potential snags. This session will address best practice in making that transition from semester to semester and will allow work time with instructional designers present to assist you. Come with a course in mind which you’d like to copy for use in the upcoming semester.

  • Intro to Bb Learn 9
    During this class you will be uploading your own content into one of your courses and learning strategies to organize your content in an online environment. Other topics include discussions, the grade center and assignments. Please bring your syllabus, and any other content that you may want to upload.

  • Assessing Your Students Using Bb Learn 9
    Bb Learn 9 offers a number of tools for assessing your students other than traditional online testing including an assignment tool for students to submit assignments electronically and interactive communication tools (Discussion Board, Blog, Journal, Wiki) which can be graded. Each of these tools includes an option to grade using a rubric. This session will address these tools as well as resources to assist you in using them. If time allows, a brief introduction to online testing using Bb Learn 9 will be addressed as well.

  • Bb Learn 9 Grade Center Tips and Tricks
    Learn tips and tricks for working more effectively in Grade Center including manually created columns, calculated columns and columns that are automatically generated when using Bb Learn 9 assessment tools. Discover how to organize columns, create custom views and access a history (log) of student activity with graded course components. We'll also address downloading/uploading your gradebook to MS Excel, pointing out some of the hazards of which to beware.

  • Face-to-Face, Web-Enhanced, Blended, Fully Online, Flipped Classroom – Oh My!
    Technology has made it possible to offer courses via several delivery methods. Come to this session to learn more about the various options and how they’re being implemented at UNI. We’ll also share beneficial technology tools available at UNI to provide a variety of learning experiences for students and to promote collaboration even in an online course environment.

  • Quality Matters in Blended and Online Learning at UNI
    UNI subscribes to the Quality Matters Program to promote best practice in the design of blended and online courses. This session will provide an overview of the Quality Matters program and acquaint you with the implementation phases of Quality Matters at UNI. This session will also include examples of UNI courses designed based on the Quality Matters Rubric.

  • Universal Design for Learning: Making Your Course Accessible for All Learners
    Having initially started as an architectural concept, Universal Design has evolved into a concept that can be applied in nearly every facet of the university experience, including the classroom. By using UDL techniques, instructors can help minimize barriers to learning that many students, regardless of ability, face in the classroom. During this presentation, we will discuss UDL and provide examples as to how technology can assist in creating a universally designed classroom.

  • Creating an Electronic Portfolio with ifolio
    Learn how the UNI ifolio system can support assessment and student growth in academic programs.  This session will provide examples of ifolio use as well as time for questions.   Bring a colleague and brainstorm together!

  • Lecture Capture Using Panopto
    Panopto is a classroom capture software that allows you to create, save, search and share rich media presentations instantly with your students. The software can be installed on Mac or Windows machines. All you need is a microphone and a computer. Learn how to get a Panopto account and how to get started. Additionally, we’ll provide an opportunity to converse with other faculty and instructional designers concerning best practice in face-to-face, blended, and fully online classroom environments.

  • Adobe Connect: Webinar Technology to Support Teaching
    How can Adobe Connect benefit you and your students? Have you ever wished you could bring a guest expert into your classroom? This session will introduce you to this webinar technology. Ideas will be shared concerning its use to support teaching and learning in addition to more traditional uses for webinars and meetings. Details will also be shared concerning how to get an Adobe Connect account.

  • Poll Everywhere
    Poll Everywhere is a student response system (clicker system) that utilizes cellphones, tablets, or computers to respond to polls. This technology, which works through texting, the web and/or Twitter, offers a “bring your own device” polling option for use with your classes so students do not have to buy clickers. Come to this session to learn more about this technology and how to get started.

  • Turning Technologies Student Response System (Clickers)
    Turning Technologies will present the basics of Turning Point and Clicker classroom technology.  Discussion will also focus on best practice and effective usage.  Tips will be shared on writing effective clicker questions for both small and large classroom learning environments. Attend this session to learn about this classroom response system and to discuss ideas for effective use with UNI colleagues.

  • Turnitin Plagiarism Prevention and Online Grading Tools
    UNI has licensed the Turnitin Building Block which gives Blackboard users convenient access to Turnitin’s suite of learning tools from within the Bb Learn 9 environment. The Turnitin suite of tools includes: 1) OriginalityCheck which ensures original work by checking submitted papers against 24+ billion web pages, 250+ million student papers and leading library databases and publications; 2) GradeMarkwhich saves time and improves feedback through online grading where standard and customized marks appear directly on the student's paper; and 3) PeerMark which engages students in the writing process by providing structured, anonymous feedback of other student's written work. This session will introduce you to the Turnitin environment and it’s interface with Blackboard Learn.

  • NetSupport School: Classroom Instruction & Management Tool
    UNI has recently installed NetSupport School on computers in the StudioIT labs in the ITTC and in the ITS Computer-Based Testing Center in Sabin Hall. This software allows instructors to visually/audibly monitor all student PCs simultaneously. Additionally, it provides the ability to deliver lesson content to students’ computer screens. NetSupport School also enables individual interaction with students and enables group or whole class collaboration.
