The University of Northern Iowa relies on the campus network to meet both operational and instructional needs. In order to protect the integrity, privacy, and security of this network, it is critical that all devices connecting to this network be managed in a secure and responsible manner. The campus network includes all wired and wireless campus network backbone devices (routers, switches, hubs, access points, etc.) and all servers, workstations, and other end-point devices that are directly connected to this network through wired, wireless and remote means(e.g. Internet, Virtual Private Network, modem), regardless of their ownership. This policy does not apply to network access that is designed and managed for university guests only.
Any device to be connected to the network (wired or wireless) must meet current baseline standards with respect to currency of the Operating System, virus protection software, and other intrusion protection software. Information Technology Services (ITS) User Services will maintain the baseline standards documentation for connection to the network All machines connecting to the network must be registered and approved by ITS Network Services (NS) who will manage the assignment of network addresses. ITS NS will be responsible for the management and proper operation of the campus network and will take action to ensure network integrity. College and Divisional Technical staff will be responsible for ensuring that university owned end point devices (servers, PCs, hand-held, etc.) that use the network are managed in a manner that protects the integrity of the network and does not interfere with network use of others as defined by the Network Citizenship Guidelines and Procedures. Management of personally owned devices (PCs, hand-held, etc.) will be the responsibility of the staff member, student, or campus affiliate and shall be managed in a manner that protects the integrity of the network and does not interfere with network use of others as defined by the Network Citizenship Guidelines and Procedures.
