Mailing List Requests


Please fill out and submit the following information that is needed to set up a mailing list.


If there are items that you don't understand, just say so and I'll try to explain more completely.

1. What name would you like to use?

You need to propose a name for the list.  This should be relatively short (maximum of 31 characters), yet not ambiguous nor too cryptic.  The name may contain only letters, digits, hyphens, and dollar signs.  Spaces and other non-alphanumeric characters are not allowed.  Departmental and Collegiate lists should include the department/college name or acronym as a part of the list name.

2. What type of list would you like?

Should the list be public, private, or for announcements only?  A public list is one that anyone may post to.  A private list is one that only the list membership may post to.  Private lists tend to be a bit more troublesome if members are on systems that are somewhat unstable in terms of e-mail addresses, etc.  An announcement list is one that only a limited number of people may post to.  In general, the list membership is not allowed to post to the list, only read what is posted by the authorized posters.

3. What type of list access would you like?

Should subscription to the list be open or referredOpen subscription allows anyone who sends the appropriate request to MAILSERV to join the list without any further action.  Referred subscription passes subscription requests to the list owner (you) for approval or rejection.

4. Should all the members of the list be able to obtain a copy of the list membership?

The default is that the members of the list may obtain a copy of the e-mail addresses on the list, but that others may not.  Typicaly "No" is selected for Announcement lists.

5. Would you like to have your list moderated?

Should the list be moderated?  Probably not.  So far, only a few of the lists running on our system are.  This would require that one (of a group) approve all postings before they are distributed.

Include any comments or justification you wish to provide in support of your list request. These will be sent along with your request to the appropriate system administrator.
