UNI Announces Gmail for Students, Faculty, and Staff

UNI CIO Shashi Kaparthi is pleased to announce that UNI will be moving all students, faculty, and staff to UNI Gmail and Google Applications for Education (Google Apps) during the fall of 2011. This change offers UNI a comprehensive and evolving set of collaboration and communication tools that enhance both instruction and campus operations. UNI Gmail and Google Apps provides quality applications and increased storage capabilities at a fraction of the cost the University would have incurred otherwise. This fall ITS will focus on migrating all users from the current UNI Email system to UNI Gmail. Other features of Google Apps will be enabled and promoted throughout the year.

In April of 2011, ITS started creating UNI Gmail accounts for all incoming students. In June, the process of migrating current students began and as of the start of the fall semester we now have 7,000 student users of UNI Gmail. We plan to complete the student migration to UNI Gmail by October 1st 2011.

Faculty and staff migration is scheduled to begin on September 6th, 2011. This will be an opt-in migration coordinated by college and divisional technology staff. On November 14th, 2011 all remaining accounts will be migrated to UNI Gmail so that the existing UNI Email system can be retired on December 1st, 2011.
