STUDENT RESPONSE SYSTEMS MOVE STUDENTS TOWARD MORE INTERACTIVE ROLE

ITS-Educational Technology has recently published a Student Response System (SRS) website. The website is designed to explain in simple terms what a student response system is, how a response system can be used in the classroom, and what teaching benefits can be expected when using a SRS. Recently the University of Northern Iowa signed an agreement with Turning Technologies, LLC; manufacturer of the Turning Point Student Response System. This agreement allows individual departments and colleges at UNI to purchase the Turning Point Student Response System at a reduced price and sets a standard to eliminate the possibility for students to have to purchase multiple devices. The Student Response System website contains a step-by-step guide on how an instructor or department at UNI can order their own Student Response System for use in their classrooms. Also, located on the "resources" page, are links that point to several articles about student response systems and a link to a study on their effectiveness in the classroom. For more details, visit the ITS-ET Student Response System site. |
ET MOVES TO DIGITAL FORMAT
Welcome to the inaugural digital issue of ET!
Welcome to Information Technology Services-Educational Technology's inaugural digital issue of ET!
As ITS-Educational Technology moved its facilities to the ITTC, it seemed the appropriate time to go digital with ET. Distributed each semester to faculty at The
University of Northern Iowa, the purpose of this newsletter is to provide information on how technology can be used to enhance the educational experience at UNI.

INTERSESSION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS
JANUARY 2-5, 2007
Have you wanted to incorporate technology into your teaching?
Have you wanted to incorporate technology into your teaching but aren't sure where to begin? Perhaps you've thought of adding an online component to your course using Blackboard Learning System (formerly known as WebCT CE6) but don't know how to get started. Maybe you'd like to learn how to present content electronically during class using the new presentation equipment showing up in lecture halls and classrooms around campus. Or possibly you've been doing some of these things and want to move to the next level. ITS-Educational Technology offers a free opportunity you won't want to miss - Faculty Focus!
Faculty Focus consists of a number of technology workshops offered the week just prior to the beginning of the spring semester so faculty can focus on learning new technology skills before the pressures of the new semester begin. Our focus that week is entirely on faculty through workshops and consultation concentrating on technology's role in teaching and learning. Reserve January 2-5 on your calendar and watch UNIonline for further announcements. |

LET'S TALK COLLABORATION
ITS Educational Technology provides many technology resources to enable you to collaborate with . . .
Did you know ITS Educational Technology provides many technology resources to enable you to collaborate with others within the state, nationally and internationally?
One good example is the course that is occurring this spring. By combining Internet based full screen video conferencing with our learning management system, Blackboard Learning System (formerly known as WebCT CE6), UNI will be offering an American Civilization course internationally! This course will include two universities in Russia as well as UNI. This is the 4th year this has occurred! What is really exciting is that you can offer courses like this too!
We also have resources available for on-demand video and audio delivery via the internet, cable TV channels that you can use to deliver content to UNI and Cedar Falls, free-to-use media production labs, desktop-based video conferencing solutions and much more!
For the future, we are looking into providing on-demand LIVE multimedia classroom capture, easy-to-use multiplatform video and audio conferencing technologies as well as other lower cost, dependable communications technologies.
So stop on in or give us a call to see what we can do for you to support your educational mission. If you are looking for collaboration solutions that we do not currently offer, let us know about it.

TELL YOUR STUDENTS
Are you using WebCT in your class?
Instead of you taking class time to teach them how to use the various features of WebCT, let ITS-Educational Technology show them! During the first two weeks of each semester we offer multiple 45 minute sessions beginning at 8:00 and continuing until 5:00 so students can learn how to use the many tools in WebCT. The schedule will be posted on our regular workshop calendar at http://www.uni.edu/its/et/tnt/c.shtml so be sure to encourage your students to attend one. We're conveniently located in the center of campus now in the Innovative Teaching and Technology Center (ITTC).
Do your students need more experience in using computers for completing coursework? Many do, even though they don't like to admit it! ITS-Educational Technology offers two free workshop series to students for one credit hour each (on a credit / no credit basis only): Mastering Microsoft Office & Creating Web Pages. Each series consists of eight two-hour workshops. Encourage your students to visit http://www.uni.edu/its/et/tnt/credit.shtml for more information.

ITS EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY IS
ON
THE MOVE!
Many of you may think our department is always “on the move” as we test and introduce many new instructional technologies to the campus. In May,
we were physically “on the move” as our department moved to the newly renovated East Gym, now known as the Innovative Teaching and Technology Center
(ITTC). You may have noticed this designation, ITTC, on several of the new signs that have been placed around campus. The relocation brings together the
Educational Technology staff from the CET building and from Schindler Education Center. We are very excited about our relocation together in our new facilities.
Most of our facilities are located on the first floor of the ITTC with additional spaces on the ground floor as well. If you're not sure where to find the ITTC,
look for number sixteen on the campus map.
WEB CT@UNI IS MOVING TO
A NEW NAME
Blackboard, Inc. has begun the initial steps of unifying the WebCT and Blackboard product lines. One of the more obvious actions in this process is removal of the WebCT nameplate and logo from Blackboard products and documentation. To minimize the impact of future name changes, localized branding of the university’s learning management system will occur. The move to the new name will become apparent in the next few months as references to the WebCT system at UNI are replaced with MyUNIverseCT.
MyUNIverseCT (pronounced “my university”) stands for MyUNIverse“ Course Tools” and will be the collective name applied to the UNI learning management system and electronic portfolio initiative.
UNI FACULTY TO PILOT BLACKBOARD PORTFOLIO
ITS-Educational Technology, along with
several faculty, has been investigating the future of electronic portfolio
implementation at UNI. We've kept a watchful eye on a number of portfolio
systems and recently had the opportunity to work with the development team
for the Blackboard Portfolio. This system allows for significant integration
with our current learning management system, Blackboard Learning System
(formerly known as WebCT CE6).

The Blackboard Portfolio system, which will adopt the
locally branded name of MyUNIverseCT Portfolio, allows users to
collect and reflect upon skills and experiences over time in a secure
environment.
The portfolio can be presented in various ways for different purposes and
shared with anyone whom the user chooses. Portfolio owners can also request
feedback from portfolio reviewers.
UNI has licensed Blackboard Portfolio and will be conducting a pilot during the Spring '07 semester. Five UNI faculty will engage students in at least
one of their classes in trying out some elements of the new portfolio system. Blackboard Portfolio pilot faculty include Donna Vinton, April
Chatham-Carpenter, Ken Baughman, Jean Schneider and Donna Schumacher-Douglas. Watch for an update in the Spring '07 issue of ET.
