T'n'T Workshop Descriptions



Not all workshops are offered every month.

Most workshops assume some knowledge of computers.
Unless otherwise noted, all workshops pertain to both
the Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
Please read carefully the Skill Levels section below.


UNI Associates* having little or no previous computing experience may call 273-2309 and ITS-Educational Technology will arrange personal tutoring prior to taking workshops. We're sorry but we cannot accomodate those with Emeritus status for personal tutoring.
*UNI Associates include current faculty, staff, and enrolled students.

Skill Levels:

Beginning - little or no experience with computers.


Intermediate - proficient with a mouse; know which Macintosh or Windows operating system you are using; able to execute basic Windows or Macintosh commands such as launching and exiting applications and saving and printing files. Know how to find what version of an application you are using without asking someone.


Advanced - very strong understanding of Windows or Macintosh operating system, including: hard drive organization; selecting and copying text and files; creating and navigating folders and directories; use of keystroke combinations and right mouse button.

Microsoft Office

Workshops preceded by this symbol are included in the credit series.

All workshops for the Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) are for Office 2007, soon to be used in the
Student Computing Centers.

►  Excel 1 (Intermediate skill level)
Prerequisite: Basic computer skills
Introduction to spreadsheet concepts and the following Excel features: entering, editing and formatting data and text; basic formulas and functions; using fills; creating charts, and printing.


►  Excel 2 (Intermediate skill level)
Prerequisite: Excel 1 or instructor approval
Additional Excel features: more on formatting, formulas and functions; absolute and relative references; database uses.


►  PowerPoint 1 (Intermediate skill level)
Prerequisite: Basic computer skills
The basics of using Microsoft PowerPoint to produce a presentation.
Presentation tips will also be given.


►  PowerPoint 2 (Intermediate skill level)
Prerequisite: PowerPoint 1 or instructor approval
Features of PowerPoint that allow you to customize your presentation: customizing backgrounds, working with objects, creating templates.


PowerPoint 3 (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisite: PowerPoint 1 & 2
Additional features of PowerPoint: custom animations; linking to other presentations;
linking to other programs; Q & A about PowerPoint capabilities.


 Word 1 (Intermediate skill level)
Prerequisite: Basic computer skills
The basics of using Microsoft Word to produce a word processing document. Editing, formatting, using the ruler to set tabs and indents, making tables.


►  Word 2 (Intermediate skill level)
Prerequisite: Word 1 or instructor approval
Be more efficient by learning how to use the following Word features: proofing, using automatic text, moving and deleting text, navigating, more about tables.


►  Word 3 (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisite: Word 1 and 2
Description: More about Styles and customizing bullets; Mail Merge. Sharing of tips and tricks.

Thunderbird (email) for
Faculty and Staff (Intermediate skill level)
Prerequisite: email account. Call 3-5555 or visit the Computer Consulting Center in CBB 27 if you don't have an account or have forgotten your username or password.
Workshop covers the features of  Thunderbird  including creating folders, importing address book entries, using the junk mail feature, and proper configuration settings.


Email@UNI for students (Intermediate skill level)
Prerequisite: email account. Call 3-5555 or visit the Computer Consulting Center in CBB 27 if you don't have an account or have forgotten your username or password.
UNI has various email programs available for student use. This workshop covers the basic features and use of several of them.


Mailman for email (Intermediate skill level)
Prerequisite: email account. Call 3-5555 or visit the Computer Consulting Center in CBB 27 if you don't have an account or have forgotten your username or password.
UNI provides a web-based email program which can be used to access your email account via the web from any location in the world having access to the web.


Calendar for faculty and staff (Intermediate skill level)
Prerequisite: Calendar account. Call 3-5555 or visit the
Computer Consulting Center in ITTC 36 (the former East Gym) if you don't have an account or have forgotten your username or password.
UNI provides a calendar program which can be used for personal scheduling, reminders of meetings, group schedules and many other scheduling activities as well as letting you access your calendar via the web from any location in the world having access to the web.


Using the Web (Intermediate skill level)
Prerequisite: Intro to Computers or equivalent
Introduces the Internet and the World Wide Web. Navigation, searching using UNI's search engine, and utilization of the World Wide Web will be covered using today's latest browsers.


►  Creating Web Pages 1: Using HTML. (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisite: General knowledge of how the web works.
The basics of how to create a World Wide Web home page using Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML). Required before taking other workshops in the Creating Web Pages series.


►  Creating Web Pages 2: Adding Graphics (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisite: Creating Web Pages 1 or instructor approval
How to deal with images on your web site.


►  Creating Web Pages 3: Composer and Uploading to UNI's server
(Advanced skill level)
Prerequisite: Creating Web Pages 1 or instructor approval
The use of a free HTML editor such as Nvu or Mozilla Composer to easily produce web pages. These easily downloadable editing programs are recommended those using UNI's Sunny server (most users) to produce simple web pages. The placement of your HTML documents onto UNI's World Wide Web Server using Filezilla (or other free FTP program will also be demonstrated.


►  Creating Web Sites Using Dreamweaver (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisite: Creating Web Pages 1 or instructor approval
Dreamweaver is generally considered to be one of the most complete HTML editing programs on the market. While it is relatively easy to use compared to other such programs, previous experience with HTML is required before taking this workshop.


►  Integrating Fireworks into Dreamweaver (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisites: Creating Web Sites Using Dreamweaver and  Creating and Editing Images or instructor approval
This hands-on workshop builds on the two prerequisites, demonstrating how to use
Dreamweaver and Fireworks together when creating web pages. Fireworks allow you to
create, edit and optimize images for the web.


Cascading Style Sheets (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisite: Creating Web Pages 1 and 2 or instructor approval
This hands-on workshop will describe the uses for and creation of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), a stylesheet language used to describe the presentation of a document written in a markup language such as HTML. See Wikipedia for more information. (This workshop has been incorporated into the Dreamweaver and Fireworks workshops and will seldom be offered as a stand-alone workshop.)


►  Preparing Materials for the Web (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisites: Competent computer user.
The World Wide Web places unique requirements on the formatting of files. Some file formats work better than others, some don't work at all; some are simple to create, others are more difficult; some can be downloaded and used or modified by anyone, others cannot. This workshop will describe many of the various methods available with an emphasis on converting to Adobe Acrobat PDF files.


►  Google Tools (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisite: Creating Web Pages 1 or instructor approval
Google Tools is a collection of free tools used to create web pages. While it is relatively easy to use, previous experience with HTML is required before taking this workshop.

 

Web Development Day (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisite: ITS-TS web page classes or equivalent
ITS-ET staff will help you with your UNI web page (we won't build the page for you, but we will help you). No reservations required.


Netmeeting -(Advanced skill level)
TnT staff will demonstrate the use of Netmeeting, Microsoft's free video conferencing tool.  You'll see how to conduct live video conferences over the Internet, and how to use many of the other tools included with the program, such as the whiteboard, chat (instant message)  and desktop sharing.

myUNIverseCT CE6 (UNI's learning management system)

myUNIverseCT CE6 I— Setting Up Your Course
(Faculty only)
Learn how to develop your WebCT site. We’ll cover skills such as adding pages, customizing a page, adding WebCT tools, using Designer Map, adding links to the navigation bar, adding a syllabus, organizing icons, uploading content using Manage Files, and adding content modules.

myUNIverseCT CE6 II—Communication Tools
(Faculty only)
PREREQUISITE:  myUNIverseCT CE6 I
Learn how to use the communication tools provided within WebCT. You’ll get hands-on practice with the discussions area, WebCT mail, chat, and the calendar tool. In addition, you'll learn about the MyWebCT portal, using bread crumbs, and how to make course backups.

myUNIverseCT CE6 III—Managing Groups and Assignments
(Faculty only)
PREREQUISITE:  myUNIverseCT CE6 I
Learn how to use WebCT's features designed specifically for supporting group work, including sign-up sheets and group activities. Create both individual and group assignments and learn how both instructors and students work within the assignments tool.

myUNIverseCT CE6 IV—Gradebook and Assessments
(Faculty only)
PREREQUISITE:  myUNIverseCT CE6 I
This workshop will address WebCT's Gradebook and Assessment tools. Assessment types include quizzes/tests, surveys and self-tests. You will get hands-on experience in actually creating each question type in a quiz.

 

Using WebCT CE6 as a Student (Intermediate skill level)
In this 50 minute session, ET staff will show you how to log on, change your password, and use the basic tools in this new version of WebCT, including submitting assignments, taking quizzes, email, discussions, chat, and calendar.

 

Introduction to ePortfolio (Intermediate skill level)
PREREQUISITE: ePortfolio account--click here to request your account.
Having an ePortfolio allows you to showcase your accomplishments and share them with others as you wish. This workshop will lead you through the process of creating your own electronic portfolio using UNI's integrated system.

Video Conferencing with Netmeeting (Description/Demonstration)
Prerequisites: Competent computer user.
A brief description and demonstration of Netmeeting, the free Microsoft product that allows you to do video conferencing and have audio conversations over the internet using an inexpensive camera and microphone. Free "telephone" service!


Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) (Description/Demonstration)
Prerequisites: none
A brief description and demonstration of PDAs. Topics include the Palm OS, different types of Palm computers, software, and accessories available.


The Tablet PC - (Description/Demonstration)
Prerequisites: none

What are these new "tablet computers"? Are they going to replace the laptop? Or the PDA? Are they what the Star TrekT people carry around? This one-hour session should answer all your questions!


►  Creating and Editing Digital Images
(Advanced skill level)
Prerequisites: Competent computer user.
Hands-on workshop on how to create images using digital cameras and scanners
and then edit those images using Fireworks.


►  Preparing Materials for the web (Intermediate Skill Level)
Prerequisites: Competent computer user.
Hands on workshop on how to convert word processed documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and images into a format that works well on the web (including WebCT).


Introduction to Image Editing (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisites: Competent computer user.
Introduction to image editing programs (Photoshop) used to enhance and manipulate digital images.


Creating Digital Movies (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisites: Very competent computer user.
An introduction to the techniques involved in creating and manipulating digital movies. An easy way to start your career as a movie producer! We use Movie Maker to teach these editing principles, which are essentially the same with similar software products.


Quick Time Virtual Reality (Advanced skill level)
Prerequisites: Very competent computer user.
A demonstration of Quick Time Virtual Reality (QTVR) including examples from UNI, production methods, and World Wide Web applications.
