Emergency Leave

Emergency leave is not for personal employee illnesses or doctor's visits, in which case use of sick leave is appropriate. If there are questions, the sick leave policy should be consulted.

The policy for Emergency Leave according to the Merit and P&S Handbooks states:

"Emergency Leave is for the Emergency Leave - maximum of 40 hours per anniversary year for the emergency care for ill or injured immediate family members. Immediate family is defined as spouse, children, stepchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, parents, stepparents, foster parents, grandparents, grandchildren, foster children, brothers, stepbrothers, foster brothers, sisters, stepsisters, foster sisters, nieces, nephews, first cousins, aunts, uncles, other members of the employee's household."

Emergency care for family members is defined as emergency care which requires the presence of the employee (may include planned and unplanned doctor appointments when due to an illness or injury). Emergency Care does not include routine wellness visits (e.g. eye checkups, dental checkups, physicals), where vacation should be used.

Staff members should plan appointments to minimally affect his/her work schedule.
