Student Computing Advisory Committee
October 30, 2007
Minutes
IN ATTENDANCE: Sam Barr (ESS), Adam Bentley (NISG), Nick Covington (LIB), Venu Gopal (Grad College), Andy Knight (CHFA), Marty Mark (VPAF), Keller McBride (CNS), Steve Moon (ITS), Sandee Murphy (Secretary), Tom Peterson (ITS), Kevin Shannon (NISG), Julia Wallace (CSBS)
ABSENT: Chris McGee (ITS), Derek Sallis (COE)
Meeting began at 11:00 a.m.
Meeting began with self-introductions as this was the first meeting of the 2007-08 year. This was followed by Tom Peterson giving a brief overview of the purpose of the Student Computing Advisory Committee (SCAC). Tom also spoke to the importance of selecting a chair for this year and asked if there were any volunteers for the position. Nick Covington, representative from the Library volunteered to serve as Chair, with no objections.
Tom Peterson described to the committee the process of placing new computers in the Student Computing Centers (SCC) and the re-distribution of the old computers. He indicated that this year there are plans to place approximately 123 new computers in the Library, Towers, Bender, Dancer, the Towers Cyber Bar, as well as the SCC support area. Tom also said that 14 new HP printers have been ordered.
Printing Guidelines Revisited
Tom Peterson told this committee that there is need to examine the printing guidelines in the SCC. The reason for this is the fact that toner prices are on the rise. Last year’s printing costs were approximately $60,000 and that cost is going up. Currently the guideline states that 40 pages is the limit for one print job. Also, if a person prints more that 500 pages per month, they will receive a friendly reminder that they are exceeding the limit.
Tom asked SCAC members to review the printing guidelines found on our web page and begin to think about how to make the guidelines more effective.
Public Area TVs
Tom Peterson presented the idea of installing TVs in some building public areas for purposes of emergency notification, UNI-TV, news captioning… He asked the committee’s thoughts about spending computer fee dollars for this project.
Julia Wallace liked the idea – especially for the emergency notification function, but asks if there would be recurring costs.
Adam Bentley said that NISG will be paying for a few monitors to be located in Maucker Union, but are waiting for price quotes from Facilities Planning. Adam believes that ITS could play a role here by displaying current events on campus, emergency information, and even student productions. This could offer student opportunities that do not currently exist. Andy Knight mentioned the UNI Cable TV group on campus – stating that there are currently 5 channels.
Keller McBride is opposed to the spending of computer fee dollars for this purpose, saying that is does not really fall under ‘student computing’.
New Issues
Steve Moon asked the group for any new ideas, concerns, shortfalls, areas to be improved. Nick Covington said that the kiosk computers on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Library need maintenance or updating or to be replaced altogether. Andy Knight asks about software that could be purchased that would turn off computers automatically, in order to save on energy costs.
Tom and Steve will investigate these issues. Steve suggested that perhaps a sub-committee could be formed. No action taken on this yet.
