Special Allocations Requests
Steve Moon reported that CHFA did get back to him on their request indicating that, yes; their project would need to be funded year after year. Steve said that he needs no additional information and that he would be making his ‘funding’ decisions very soon.

PC Re-distribution from Computing Labs
Tom Peterson reported that it is once again time to solicit requests from across campus for the 123 PC’s that are set to be replaced in the Student Computing Labs. Tom indicated that ITS normally receives requests for approximately 400 machines. The deadline for receipt of requests is Friday, April 20. Tom asks that any SCAC member interested in assisting with the distribution choices send an email to him.

Printing Costs in Student Computing Centers
Tom Peterson again revisited the subject of rising costs of printing in the Student Computing Labs. He reported that those who have printed over 500 sheets got an email from him as a warning. Indicated that ‘gamers’ are printing large volumes. Also printing high volumes for distribution to their classes are graduate assistants.

Copyright Issues
Steve Moon presented the subject of copyright protection and the Internet. He indicated that UNI’s current procedure in dealing with copyright infringement is to disable the abuser’s machine, inform them of the offense, and require them to remove said material, and sign an agreement indicating the appropriate action has been taken and will not be repeated.

The music industry is beginning to work with universities to further prevent copyright infringement where their material is at risk. Currently two letters are sent – one saying they will sue the individual, and a second stating that the university is to retain any evidence (records) for court proceedings.

Steve says that universities are reacting in different ways. Some are notifying the offender and some are not and leaving the notification up to the music industry. Currently UNI says “delete the material and delete the program”. This approach may change. David Weber asked if subpoenas are issued; Steve says UNI does not hand over any information until then.

Adam Bentley questioned what student reactions are to this from other universities – Steve does not know at this point.

Steve is meeting later in the week with NISG officers to discuss this topic.

Next meeting will be April 16, 2007 at noon.
