February 26, 2007
Minutes

IN ATTENDANCE: Sam Barr (ESS), Sandy Brasch (ITS), Marty Mark (VPAF), Steve Moon (ITS), Sandee Murphy (Secretary), Tom Peterson (ITS), Julia Wallace (CSBS), David Weber (ITS),

ABSENT: Grant Erwin (NISG), Kristin Ferring (CSBS), Lucas Green (CHFA), Melinda Hamerlinck (CBA), Andy Krumm (COE), Brian Larkin (NISG), Mallory Losee (LIB), Jennifer Younie (NISG)

Meeting began at 12:14 p.m.

Special Allocations Requests

This year’s estimate of requests is $180,000 with approximately $70,000 of this being recurring costs. $110,000 remains to be distributed. Steve Moon expressed concerns about requests from CHFA and Library being recurring costs. He is also concerned that a $60,000 request from Library was not funded by the Library to begin with. Sam Barr questioned if it would make any difference in the award if the recurring costs were less than the initial cost.

Steve Moon’s funding priorities as of today:
NISG requests
Turning Point
Education Technology – large classrooms (seats over 100)
Laptops for Library
CHFA – electrical upgrade to one of their labs

Tom suggested that SCAC survey each member about Steve’s lists and David Weber concurred. Steve indicated he will do this.

Tom also suggested that SCAC obtain detail/clarification regarding the Library’s laptop request. He feels the laptop price may be high.

Printing Costs in Student Computing Centers
Tom Peterson revisited the subject of rising costs of printing in the Student Computing Labs. He reported that those who have printed over 500 sheets got an email from him as a warning. Indicated that ‘gamers’ are printing large volumes. Also printing high volumes for distribution to their classes are graduate assistants.

GOOGLE Applications
Steve Moon reported that President Allen requested that UNI investigate Google applications for students – to include email, calendar, storage, etc. This would be free and could be marketed as if it comes from UNI. Steve indicated there are several concerns, including legal issues, fear of the unknown, fear of outsourcing (losing control), the cost of ‘getting out’.

Next meeting will be March 26, 2007 at noon.
