Student Computing Advisory Committee
January 22, 2007
Minutes
IN ATTENDANCE: Sam Barr (ESS), Sandy Brasch (ITS), Lucas Green (CHFA), Andy Krumm (COE), Mallory Losee (LIB), Marty Mark (VPAF), Steve Moon (ITS), Sandee Murphy (Secretary), Tom Peterson (ITS), Julie Wallace (CSBS), David Weber (ITS), Jennifer Younie (NISG)
ABSENT: Grant Erwin (NISG), Kristin Ferring (CSBS), Melinda Hamerlinck (CBA), Brian Larkin (NISG)
Meeting began at noon.
Special Allocations Requests
Steve Moon distributed a worksheet identifying Student Computer Fee Special Allocation requests. This year’s estimate of requests is $180,000 with approximately $70,000 of this being recurring costs. $110,000 remains to be distributed. Steve asked for questions and/or discussion of the requests listed. Any Krumm asked for a review of the criteria considered when making allocations. As stated at the previous meeting, uses of Special Allocation money are for those groups that do not have regular access to Computer Fee funds. Other factors considered are listed below:
• Items that will directly benefit students
• Instructional tools
• Administrative tools
• How many students would be impacted
Marty Mark questioned the request made by the College of Education. COE is asking for reimbursement for the purchase/install of equipment for Electronic Medical Records to be used by Division of Athletic Training. This is a compliance issue and there is potential for recurring costs.
Tom Peterson wondered where each of these requests falls on the requesting college’s priority lists and why these items were not funded by the college. Tom also indicated that he is in favor of funding the Student Response System (clickers) and the Laptops for NISG.
Steve did say that money not allocated this year can be rolled over and made available during the next year. At the next meeting Steve will present more information and provide a list of priority allocations, as he sees it.
Steve will discuss the Special Allocation requests for FY 07 at the next meeting and ask for input from committee members.
Printing Costs in Student Computing Centers
Tom Peterson revisited the subject of rising costs of printing in the Student Computing Labs. He reported that a survey of Lab Attendants believe that 1,000 pages free for a semester would be more than enough – that there should be charge for pages over 1,000.
Tom reported that last year approximated $40,000 was spent on paper for the labs. That cost, at 1.5 cents per page, this year is about $60,000. Another rise in the cost of printing can be attributed to the increased cost of toner.
David Weber offered the thought that charging for printing would certainly cut down on wasted printing. Charging may also cut down on the number of people using another’s log-on.
Jennifer Younie supports a limit on ‘free’ printing – but indicated that graduate students may need a higher limit.
Tom invited those members interested to let him know that they would be willing to work on a sub-committee to draft a print policy. Three questions this sub-committee will look at are:
1. Whether or not to charge for printing in the computing labs
2. How many pages to offer per person, per semester for free
3. How much to charge per page for printing above the limit
Future Agenda Items
Some issues suggested by the membership for future discussion are:
• Printing
• Special allocations
• Wireless access in all ICN rooms
Next meeting will be February 19, 2007 at noon. Location TBD
