Khidir

Name:               Khidir

Major:              Marketing Management and Exercise Science

Hometown:      Kula Lumpur, Malaysia

Why did you decide to attend college in the United States? And why did you choose UNI?

I chose to study in the US because of how the course structure works: it is not heavily dependent on exams and tests but also emphasizes group work and assignments, which I feel is a good method to put into practice what we have learnt in class. I chose UNI because it has a great business and exercise science department, both of which are the majors that I am currently pursuing. What got me really hooked on coming was the fact that UNI has its own Dome!

What do you like the most about UNI?

I love how friendly everyone is over here: not only students but also the staff and professors. Some would go so far to help me out once they know I have a difficulty I am facing. This friendly environment was not the case when I decided to experiment by going to a different school last summer to see how it was.

Do you participate in any on-campus organizations or activities?

I am heavily involved with organizations in UNI. I am currently the President of the UNI International Club of Business Students, which in turn automatically puts me into the UNI Business Presidents’ Council. I am also an active member of the UNI International Student Promoters (ISP) and Student Admissions Ambassadors (SAA). Despite the amount of involvement I have, I enjoy every minute of it!

Do you work on campus?

Currently, I have three jobs on campus: UNI Study Abroad Peer Advisor, UNI WRC Personal Trainer and Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC) Stagehand. Of the three, my favorite job would be the stagehand because it allows me to work with professionals in the Broadway industry and also has allowed me to get a sweet beautiful smile from the lovely Belle, the beauty of “Beauty and the Beast” musical.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

Without a doubt it has to be the Wellness Recreation Center (WRC). I spent most of my time working out by doing weights, racquetball and occasionally, rock climbing.

What have you done to help make UNI your home away from home?

I have managed to establish a close relationship with many people here at UNI. Students, staff and professors here mostly have become my close friends and the people I turn to whenever I am facing a difficult task. I have never been so happy and loved like this in my life before!

What is the one thing you would tell a new or prospective international student about attending a college in the United States?

I would tell them to give themselves some time before they can adapt to this new culture. I knew some people who were not successful at first when they arrived in the US. Give yourself some time and it will all pay off. I promise.

How has your academic experience been?

Simply magnificent I must say. Whenever I have problems with class material, I go and see my instructor for that course and he or she will sit down with me till I finally understand the material that I was unsure about. I have learned so much and have received grades I thought was not possible before.

How did you determine your major… i.e. did you take a class, consult with UNI programs, inspired by someone or something?

When I was at my home college in Malaysia, I took a career test, a test that decides which career path is suitable for a person depending on the personality questions that were asked. I originally wanted to do engineering but my passion was definitely business, seeing that I love communicating with others. I also chose Exercise Science as my major because I was inspired by how much weight I managed to lose in 6 months (50 pounds!). I want to help others achieve what I have done. I absolutely love the learning process that I am currently going through with both my majors!

Tell us about any great classes or professors that have helped, inspired or challenged you with determining your career path.

I took a class called Organizational Management with Martin Hansen and he has helped me by giving so many advices on management and also life in general. We occasionally even hang out outside of campus just to catch up and for me to let him continue to inspire me with his life stories. He is truly just wonderful
