SEVIS: Student and Exchange Visitor Information
System
U.S. Department of State:
Operates Embassies and Consulates around the world. State
issues the visas.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security:
Responsible for controlling movement of people into the United
States. Also responsible for monitoring people while in the
U.S. and for enforcing federal law. The Bureau of Citizenship
and Immigration Services (BCIS), Bureau of Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (BICE) and The Bureau of Customs and Border
Protection (BCBP) are all subdivisions of the DHS. These three
bureaus were formerly known as the Immigration and Naturalization
Service (INS). The title “Immigration and Naturalization
Service” still appears on many official documents and
forms.
Form I-94: Arrival &
Departure Record.
Form I-20: Certificate of
Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status for academic
and Language Students. A Dept. of Homeland Security form.
Form DS-2019: Certificate
of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor status (J-1). A Dept.
of State form.
Visa: Issued by the Department
of State, tells the Immigration & Naturalization Service
that you have been approved by the State Department to seek
entry to the U.S.
