Statement of Purpose

Master of Arts

The Department of Languages and Literatures at the University of Northern Iowa prides itself on preparing students for teaching and non-teaching positions in today's world. Students are expected to have an undergraduate major or minor in the intended area of study. Students who do not have a major or minor in the intended area of study may be admitted provisionally, providing they can document their language skills and the academic preparation required to succeed in the graduate program for which they are applying. There is a thesis and non-thesis option.

Admission Requirements

  • International Application for Admission
  • Official Transcripts sent directly from your current and/or all prior academic institutions that you have attended to the Office of Admissions
  • B.A. in intended area of study
  • Statement of Purpose in the target language
  • Minimum undergraduate grade point average of a 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale
  • Official report of TOEFL score (550/79) or IELTS (6.5)
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation

Application Deadlines

  • Admission for academic year (fall/spring semesters): February 1

Graduate Assistantship Requirements

  • Before being considered for a stipend or scholarship, students must be admitted to degree status (see above for info on admissions).
  • Applicants applying for graduate assistant stipends and graduate tuition scholarships should have two letters of recommendation sent to Department Head, Department of Languages and Literatures, Univ. of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA 50614-0502.
  • Students must complete and submit the graduate assistantship and/or tuition scholarship applications forms (www.grad.uni.edu/assistantships) must be received by the department by February 1.
