Master of Arts

The Master of Arts Program in English is divided into three different emphases: Literature, Creative Writing, and English Studies. All three emphases require Introduction to Graduate Study, a core of graduate courses in literature (or, for English Studies, in any area of English or writing), and the comprehensive examination (written Major Texts exam and oral Specialty Field exam). The Literature and English Studies emphases culminate in either a research paper and portfolio or an extended thesis. The Creative Writing emphasis (which allows concentrations in fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction) includes a minimum of four creative writing workshops in addition to graduate literature classes and requires a creative thesis.
