Execution of Justice
Directed by Karen S. Mitchell, Ph.D.
Written by Emily Mann
Produced by arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
October 21, 22, 23 and 24 7:30PM

Set in a San Francisco courtroom, Execution of Justice by Emily Mann centers on the first-degree murder trial of Dan White, the man accused of murdering George Moscone, the mayor of San Francisco, and board of supervisors member Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the United States. Drawn entirely from the trial and other records and supplemented by interviews, the docudrama reveals how justice was “executed” —not in the sense of being carried out, but in the sense of being destroyed by the justice system itself—in one of the most controversial verdicts of the twentieth century.

Stereotypes related to our genders and sexual identities abound in today’s mediated world. Everyday we are told by Wall Street, the media, and our friends and families how people should behave based on their genders and sexual identities. This performance art piece challenges some of the assumptions that are made about how we should perform our genders and sexual identities, and the parts that culture, society, politics and media play in this sometimes macabre and bizarre dance. The performances will take place in and around the Interpreters Theatre space, and the audience will have opportunities to participate actively or passively.
(This production contains mature language, themes and situations. It is recommended for mature audiences only.)

Stopping at nothing to make his point, Dr. Carroll tells the sad, sordid story of how the nicest kids in town are lured into a world of violence, weird orgies, wild parties, unleashed passions, and drug-crazed abandon.
