Robert A. Stebbins, FRSC, born in the U.S.A. in 1938, received his Ph.D. in sociology in 1964 from the University of Minnesota. He has taught in the departments of sociology at Presbyterian College (1964-1965), Memorial University of Newfoundland (1965-1973), the University of Texas at Arlington (1973-1976), and the University of Calgary (1976-1999). In 2000 he was appointed Professor Emeritus and Faculty Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Calgary, Visiting Professor at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia (2001), Visiting Professor at the University of Bedfordshire (2005-2009), and Visiting Scholar at the University of Northern Iowa (2011). He was also Head of department at Calgary (6 years) and Memorial (3 years). Dr. Stebbins served as President of the Social Science Federation of Canada in 1991-1992, after having served as President of the Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association in 1988-1989. He was Vice-President of the Canadian Association for Leisure Studies from1993 to1996. In recognition of his scholarly contributions, Stebbins was elected Fellow of the Academy of Leisure Sciences (1997); Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1999); Senior Fellow of the World Leisure Academy (2010); and Alumni Member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, Macalester College Chapter (2011,). e is fffffHe has written over 225 articles and chapters and written or edited 40 books, including recently, Serious Leisure: A Perspective for Our Time and Serious Leisure and Nature: Sustainable Consumption in the Outdoors.
