Income Tax Season

An income tax return is a report that you must make to the Internal Revenue Service (www.irs.gov) of the U.S. Government for any calendar year when you earn income in the United States. Fortunately, you do not need to do these alone. Free help is available! On Monday, February 28, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (V.I.T.A.) program will begin helping international students prepare 2010 income tax returns. VITA was established by the Internal Revenue Service to help low income people who may find it difficult to pay for tax preparation services. The program also provides accounting students an experiential learning opportunity as they work with taxpayers. Assistance will be available from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Room 223 of the Curris Business Building on Mondays and Wednesdays. (Students should arrive before 5:30 p.m. on any of these days to get on the list for that day.) Services will be available until April 13, excluding March 14 and 16 during spring break. If you earned income in the U.S. during the year 2009, you will need to file an income tax return with the U.S. government, specifically with the Internal Revenue Service. (www.irs.gov) Income taxes can be confusing and complicated, so you are encouraged to seek free assistance from the V.I.T.A. volunteers. Be sure to bring your W-2 form from UNI and any other tax forms you have received or do receive before February 28. You will also need your I-20 or DS-2019 form, your passport and I-94 card. VITA does not take appointments or do returns outside of the Monday and Wednesday night time periods, so if those days/times do not work for you, you will have to go somewhere else and pay to have your return done or do it yourself without assistance. If you did not have a job in 2010, you should still file IRS form 8843, available here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8843.pdf You will only need to complete Part I and Part III before signing at the bottom of the form and sending it to the IRS at the address indicated in the instructions. April 15, 2010 is the deadline for filing all 2010 tax returns!
