The University of Northern Iowa has a long and rich tradition of study abroad programs for its students. The Office of International Programs supports the Study Abroad Center to help students plan and participate in a
study abroad experience. The Study Abroad Center is located in Baker 59 and is open during regular business hours.
Students may arrange to spend a semester or an academic year abroad. There are three ways students can plan a study abroad program through the StudyAbroad Center:
UNI Exchange Universities. UNI has an exchange agreement with 20 universities around the world. A complete list is available from the Study Abroad Center, but the universities are located in Europe, Asia and South America. Each university provides a unique program. Some of these universities offer instruction in English, some instruct in the local
language. Some universities provide a full curricular offering, others are more limited in the courses students may take.
The Study Abroad Center will work with students to identify opportunities at each institution and finding a match for each studentŐs needs and goals.
Students attending an exchange university are responsible for paying UNI resident tuition during their semester abroad, air fare, room and board at the overseas institution and other personal and/or incidental costs (passports, visas, room deposits, additional travel expenses, etc.). Costs will vary and are researched and provided by Study Abroad Center staff.
Iowa Regents Programs. UNI is in partnership with the Iowa Regents Institutions to offer study abroad opportunities at four European universities and one university in Australia. Like the exchange universities, each program is unique. Some are based in language study, others offer a broad selection of instruction.
Students participating in an Iowa Regents Program pay a flat rate to the Program that generally covers room, board and tuition. The cost for each overseas institution varies. As in the exchange university program, students are responsible for air fare and other personal and/or incidental costs. Costs will vary and are researched and provided by Study Abroad Center staff.
Overseas Programs Not Affiliated with UNI. There are occasions when students' overseas study plans do not match with any opportunities offered through UNI. The Study Abroad Center has a reference library of other study abroad opportunities that students may use to research their options. TheStudy Abroad staff will assist students in locating a program that meets their requirements.
Transfer of Credits to UNI. Students can earn UNI credits while studying abroad. Students select their overseas courses in conjunction with their academic advisor prior to their departure. The Study Abroad Center assists students with the transfer of credits from the foreign university to UNI.
Timing. Students interested in studying abroad are encouraged to start planning as soon as possible. A six month planning period generally provides enough time to complete the process without a rush. Sophomore
year is a good time to plan a study abroad experience, but students also study abroad in their junior and senior years.
Financial Aid. The Office of International Programs has scholarship funds available to support UNI students studying abroad. Application forms and additional information are available through the Study Abroad Center. Many scholarships and loans from other sources are applicable to study abroad programs. Students are encouraged to contact the UNI Office of Student Financial Aid for additional information.
The information provided here is a brief overview of Study Abroad Programs at UNI. A visit to the Study Abroad Center is recommended for all students planning an overseas study experience.
