You've got questions about Study Abroad?

                          You aren't the only one!

Here are some answers to common study abroad questions.

   * What are the qualifications to study abroad?

Qualifications vary from university to university. Generally, you need to be in good academic standing. If
the language of instruction is not English, you need to have your language skills assessed by an appropriate department on campus. * Can you only study abroad in your junior year? No. You may study abroad in your sophomore, junior or senior years. Undersome circumstances, a second
semester freshman may study abroad. Sophomore year is an ideal time to consider going abroad
for a semester. * Is it expensive to study abroad? If you study abroad with one of UNI's exchange universities (Study Abroad Locations) you pay UNI tuition,
you pay your room and board overseas, andyour airfare. You also buy books and may have some
miscellaneous expenses from your host university. Of course, all of your personal expenses including travel while youÕre there, gifts and souvenirs, etc. must be considered as well. The Iowa Regents programs to Wales and Australia are priced a little differently, but are fairly equivalent
in cost to attending an exchange university. As you can see, studying abroad can be quite affordable. * Can I get financial aid to study abroad? Yes. A variety of financial aid is available. We recommend that you meet with the UNI Student Financial
Aid Office to explore the possibilities. * When are the deadlines to apply to study abroad? Generally, you need to apply by November 1 to study abroad in the spring andby March 15 to study abroad
in the fall. There are exceptions to these dates. Check with the Study Abroad Center for details. * Where will I live overseas? Different universities have different options. Some students stay in dormitories, some in university
sponsored houses and apartments and somestudents stay with families. * Can I study abroad if I don't know a second language? Yes. There are programs available at the University of Hull, England; University of Wales, Swansea; and
University of Newcastle, Australia where the national language is English. You may also study in France, Japan, Denmark and Austria where English language programs are available. * I'd like a student's perspective. Can I talk to a UNI student who's already studied abroad? Yes. Contact the Study Abroad Center and we'll put you in touch with a students who's "been there
and done that." * Do I need a passport or a visa to study abroad? Everyone needs a passport to study abroad. Some students will need a visa and the Study Abroad Center
will provide you with the information you need. * What about shots and other health issues? Check with your physician about any immunizations or other health care concerns. We recommend a
full physical and dental check before you go. * What do I do about money when I'm overseas? Generally, you may use an ATM card just like you do in the U.S. Check with your bank and make sure
your card is on an international network. You will use the same "code" to get access to your account.
The money you withdraw will be in the currency of the country you are in. * How do I register for classes while I'm away? The easiest way is to register over the internet. If this is not possible, the Study Abroad Office will assist
you in any way we can to register for the next semester. * Will I have e-mail access overseas? Most universities provide students with an e-mail account. Many students simply continue to use their
UNI e-mail address. * Will my credits transfer back to UNI? There is a process by which credits can be evaluated before you go. That way, you'll know if a course will
apply to your major, minor, or general education requirements. We strongly suggest you complete this process
prior to your departure.
