The University of Northern Iowa's commitment to putting “Students First" firmly established its reputation for providing first-rate educational experiences. The nation's most highly respected reporting organizations consistently rank UNI among the best for program quality, value and outcomes.

 

For the tenth consecutive year, the University of Northern Iowa is ranked second in the "Midwestern Universities--Master's" category for public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2007 America's Best Colleges. UNI also ranked 18th on a combined list of public and private Midwest regional universities.

 

UNI is ranked in first place for the pass rate of first-time candidates on the Uniform Certified Public Accounting (CPA) Examination in May 2003, the most recent May exam for which data is available.

On that exam, 56.4 percent of UNI's first-time candidates without advanced degrees passed, placing them No. 1 of the more than 1,000 colleges and universities represented.

 

UNI has been cited for its high performance in graduation rates in a national report released by the Education Trust, a Washington, D.C.-based organization. When comparing UNI to 42 similar institutions with similar students, UNI's median six-year graduation rate of 67 percent ranked 19 percentage points higher than its peer institutions.

 

The Doctor of Industrial Technology degree, the only one of its kind in the world, is designed to develop scholars in the fields of education and industry. In its 26 years, the DIT program has graduated 86 students.

 

University of Northern Iowa student athletes (387) achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.04 for the spring 2004 semester.

 

There is 100 percent placement of music education majors.

 

UNI was named a 2005 Best College in the Midwestern Region by the Princeton Review.

 

The Iowa Lakeside Lab is run cooperatively by the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. The 140-acre campus on West Okoboji Lake was established as a field station in 1909 and is one of the oldest such facilities in the country. It provides hands-on experiences for students wishing to work with Iowa's natural and human environments.

Tenured and tenure-track faculty teach 75 percent of UNI's classes, providing excellent academic quality to our students.

 

UNI is ranked fourth in the nation for the total number of students who study abroad among master's degree institutions, according to Open Doors 2002, the annual report on international education published by the Institute of International Education.

 

Among the approximately 110 biology undergraduates each year, more than 60 percent go into healthcare-related fields, including medical school (10 percent); chiropractic school (10 percent); dental, physical therapy, physician assisting, pharmacy, occupational therapy, optometry and veterinary schools (40 percent); and other fields related to healthcare, such as medical technology/clinical laboratory science, nuclear medicine, nurse practitioner, orthotics or pathology assisting and mortuary school.

 

U.S. News & World Report ranked UNI's Speech-Language Pathology Degree program ninth in the country and second in the Midwest for programs that stop at the master's degree. There is 100 percent employment of master's graduates in this program.

Bachelor's degree graduates of the athletic training major have achieved an average pass rate of 70 percent on the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification Examination, compared to a national average of about 30 percent. The undergraduate program has more students than any other program in the state, and our program is among the top five in the nation in terms of enrollment.

 

Certified by the American Chemical Society, the UNI chemistry program leads all colleges and universities in Iowa in the number of bachelor's degree graduates it produces each year.

 

UNI is home to one of the country's largest and most prominent contingents of business ethics scholars with six ethics professors. The university established a chair in business ethics in 2000, with a $1 million gift from ‘70 alum David W. Wilson.
