Personalized Experiences
|
UNI is in the forefront of providing every student with affordable access to excellence in higher education. Our programs are designed to enrich students' experiences with practical work experience, international opportunities and help in graduating as efficiently as possible.
The UNI Office of Clinical Field Experiences has placed students in elementary and secondary schools in 40 states and 33 countries.
UNI places approximately 575 student teachers in 40 to 50 Iowa counties every year. The Cooperative Education/Internship program is an academic program designed to complement a student's formal education with practical work experience directly related to the student's major. Approximately 400 students participate in a co-op or internship each year. The University of Northern Iowa has developed a centralized student services area in Gilchrist Hall, making it more convenient for students to handle their university business. Offices include: Admissions, Advising and Career Services, Business Operations/Cashier's Office, Compliance and Equity Management, Cooperative Education. Financial Aid, Human Resource Services, Public Safety, Registration and Academic Records, Student Services Center, Vice President for Administration and Finance and Vice President for Educational and Student Services. The Plan of Study is a planning and advising support system for students and advisors. The online tool was created to help undergraduate students better plan their overall educational experience and to help students graduate as efficiently as possible. It helps students think ahead through their entire program and make strategic decisions about the courses they take and when they take them. The POS may be accessed at www.uni.edu/pos/. The Tuition Opportunity Program (TOP) for Iowans is a groundbreaking full-tuition program for freshmen whose families are unable to contribute financially to their child's education. The program was created by UNI to meet the needs of lower income families who believe attending college is beyond their financial means. TOP guarantees full payment of tuition and fees for up to four years through a combination of grants and scholarships, regardless of future tuition increases.
PAWS – a personalized admissions Web site gives prospective students a glimpse of what their life might be like at UNI. www.uni.edu/paws Designed to help families budget for the cost of higher education, the UNI Department of Residence's “2-Year Advantage" plan allows students living in the residence halls to receive the same dining/housing rate for the first and second years of their contracts. The online financial aid calculator is a new tool to help families determine financial aid awards. “Calculate My Aid" is currently under development to provide a realistic picture of financial aid options and to help families make crucial financial decisions months in advance of attending UNI. To access the online tool, visit the UNI Office of Financial Aid Web site, www.uni.edu/finaid/, and click on “Calculate My Aid." Students can fill their free time with activities offered from more than 200 student organizations, from those related to their major to strictly social opportunities. More than 3,000 UNI students participate in intramural sports each year.
UNI offers about 60 study abroad programs in 30 countries around the world.
The UNI Jump Start Orientation Program provides ethnic minority students an opportunity to make a smooth transition to the university. The five-day orientation program provides early move-in, course registration in learning communities, cluster housing, social activities as well as sessions on resources to help them be successful. There are eight “springboard houses" in the Department of Residence. They house communities of all freshmen, providing a different, and perhaps more comfortable, living option from traditional mixed-class residence halls. |
