CO-OP INFORMATION

(FOR CURRENT STUDENTS ONLY)

Department Requirements

Cooperative Education is strongly recommended for all students in Industrial Technology to acquire work experience related to your intended career. The candidate must have a declared major in the Department of Industrial Technology, be of junior status with a minimum GPA of 2.5, and have at least one semester completed at UNI. Any waiver of departmental requirements requires the approval of the departmental co-op coordinator and the department head. All students must meet first with the departmental co-op coordinator, Michelle Garris. Credit is earned for 80 clock hours of work experience equaling one semester hour of credit. Major Elective; Graded. 3 hour maximum per semester.

Graphic Communications: Cooperative Education is required for at least 3 SH for students receiving the BA degree in Graphic Communications.  Eligibility includes meeting the departmental requirements, as stated above, and must complete a minimum of 11 semester hours of Graphic Communications technical courses, one of which must be 330:055. Major Credit; Graded basis.

Manufacturing Technology: Cooperative Education is required for at least 1 SH for students receiving the BS degree in Manufacturing Technology. Major Credit; Graded basis for the first placement. Succeeding placements may be on a Credit/No Credit basis or Graded basis.

Technology Education: University/General Elective; Graded basis.

Electrical and Information Engineering Technology: University/General Elective; Graded basis.

Technology Management: University/General Elective; Technical Elective; Graded basis.

Construction Management: University/General Elective; Graded basis.

Procedure for Involvement

 1.                   Meet with the departmental cooperative education coordinator, Michelle Garris, to discuss if you are eligible to complete a co-op.  She will need to know what type of work you will be doing and where. Once you have met with her you can complete the Co-op Education Faculty Approval Form via the internet at the following website………..(http://www.uni.edu/careerservices/co-op/forms/approval.html).

2.                   Schedule a meeting with the University Cooperative Education Coordinator, phone 273-6041 and ask to set up an appointment with Joan Smothers.  You must take the “Career Link” form and the “UNI Cooperative Education/Internship Placed Student Information Worksheet”.  Here are the links to the two forms you will want to take with you to Joan’s office.

 3.         After the Co-op Faculty Agreement Form is completed by the University Co-op Office personnel, it must be approved and signed by Michelle Garris and Dr. M.F. Fahmy, Head, Department of Industrial Technology.  At this time you will want to obtain the course syllabus from Michelle Garris.

4.         Michelle Garris will send the signed Faculty Agreement Form to the Co-op Department Office to register you for the cooperative education course.  IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE REGISTERED FOR THE CLASS. (Double check on the computer.)

 5.         Begin employment and complete course requirements as specified by the syllabus.
