Are you a senior in high school? CNS Scholarships- Industrial Technology For incoming freshmen intending to major in the Industrial Technology Department. Students must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 and demonstrate satisfactory progress toward a degree in the Department to keep the scholarship. Criteria to apply for the scholarship is…being able to obtain admission to the University, have a 3.0 GPA or higher from high school and a minimum ACT score of 24. A one page paper must be written as well answering the question “Why choose the Industrial Technology department/majors?” Qualified applicants must be available to attend the “Interview Day” in the department in February. Further information will be mailed in the future to the qualified applicants. Here is a listing of available scholarships in the Department of Industrial Technology.... SME Waterloo Chapter C-186 Scholarship Requirements: SME student chapter member, declared major in Industrial Technology for at least two previous semesters and at least a junior at the time of application. The student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Selection of the recipient from applicants who meet all the above criteria will be based upon the following additional criteria: academic standing, communication skills written and oral, leadership potential and career potential. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers is an international professional society dedicated to serving its members and the manufacturing community through knowledge sharing and learning opportunities. The local SME chapter in Waterloo has a long tradition of support for the University student SME chapter. Chapter C-186 is one of over 300 worldwide chapters comprised of manufacturing production, research and design engineers, technologists & corporate executives. See Dr. O’Meara in ITC 38 for specific details. Associated General Contractors of Iowa Scholarship Requirements: Must be a student majoring in Construction Management and in good standing in the major. Scholarship applicants must display an interest in construction (highway and road) and have plans to work in the state of Iowa after graduation. The Associated General Contractors of Iowa is an organization of qualified construction contractors and industry related companies dedicated to skill, integrity and responsibility. For over 75 years AGCI has been the voice of the Iowa Construction Industry. The association offers a full range of services satisfying the needs and concerns of its members, thereby improving the quality of construction and protecting the public interest. James P. LaRue Scholarship Requirements: A declared major in the Department of Industrial Technology with a cumulative GPA of 3.20 at the time of application. A minimum of 30 SH (15 at UNI) must be completed with at least 12 SH yet to take after the semester of application. Dr. James P. LaRue served as a faculty member in the department for over 30 years with a specialization in metalworking and metal casting. He has written books in metal casting. In his retirement he enjoys artist blacksmithing and converting a one room schoolhouse into a two bedroom guesthouse. Duncan Lampman Scholarship Requirements: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior Technology Education major with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and a major GPA of 3.5. Selected by the scholarship committee based on merit, opportunity, and diversity. Duncan Lampman is the founder of this scholarship. He received his BA from UNI in Industrial Arts and Mathematics in 1940. He retired as an associate professor from the School of Technology at Southern Illinois University. Foundry Education Foundation Scholarship Requirements: Must be a student majoring in Metal Casting and meet FEF criteria. Applications and criteria requirements can be obtained from Dr. Scott Giese in ITC 27. The Foundry Education Foundation is a National Foundation Organization that supports foundry education in America through scholarships. The scholarships exist by donations from industry and individuals who are interested in supporting foundry education. H.H. Harris Foundation Scholarship Requirements: A declared Metal Casting major who is a U.S. citizen. Students must show financial need and give educational background information. This scholarship deadline is during the month of June each year. Applications can be obtained from Dr. Scott Giese in ITC 27. The H.H. Harris Foundation was established pursuant to the terms of the Henry Hickman Harris for the purpose of providing scholarships and other forms of educational aid to students and professionals in the metallurgist and metal casting fields. Matthew McCoy Memorial Requirements: Junior or Senior, with a declared major in Construction Management, 2.5 GPA, and showing financial need. Full-tuition recipients are not eligible to apply. Scholarship requires a written recommendation from a Construction Management faculty member. Submit a brief essay (no more than 2 pages) describing two aspects of your student life. First, identify your current academic experiences and future plans relative to the Construction Management program and the field of Industrial Technology; and second, identify your leadership involvement or participation in any and all student activities or programs, including volunteer or paid incentives both on and off campus. His family, friends and classmates established this scholarship in loving memory of Matthew C. McCoy. Matt was killed in a car accident during his senior year at UNI as a construction management major. The scholarship will be awarded annually to the individual possessing the same desire and passion for the Construction Management Program, Construction Industry and life in general, which Matt exemplified. Master Builders of Iowa Requirements: Must be a declared Construction Management major entering junior or senior year of study and have a GPA of 2.5 or better. The Master Builders of Iowa has been serving the needs of Iowa’s construction industry since 1912. It is one of the states full service construction trade associations and has over 1900 members statewide. Peters Construction Corporation Requirements: Must be a student majoring in Construction Management entering junior or senior year of study and have a GPA of 2.5 or better. Selection is in conjunction with Waterloo Building Trades Association & Master Builders of Iowa. Peters Construction Corporation is a commercial general contractor located in Waterloo, Iowa. Peter’s mission is to take their customers’ ideas and turn them into reality, through understanding and unequaled commitment. Dave Peters, company president, is a 1978 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and one the first graduates in the construction major. He has also served as an adjunct instructor in construction management for several years. Waterloo Building Trades & Employers Association Requirements: Must be a student entering Junior or Senior year of study, have a GPA of 2.5 or better and be a declared Construction Management major. The Waterloo Building Trades Employers Association is a group of Waterloo and Cedar Falls organizations involved in the construction trades. The group is made up of general contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers, and service providers primarily working in the area of commercial construction. Roger & Kathy Betts Scholarship Requirements: Students must be a declared Technology Education major and have completed a minimum of 45 cumulative credit hours with a minimum of 12 credit hours at UNI at the time of application for the scholarship. The recipient must also have a minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA and a 2.75 GPA in his/her major. Financial need must be evident and the applicant must be recommended by at least one faculty member from the Industrial Technology department (letter of recommendation). All applicants must fill out an application and type a two page (maximum) essay identifying their background, involvement in student activities in the department and university, work experience, and why they want to be a technology teacher. Dr. Roger Betts was a previous Industrial Technology professor at UNI who has recently retired from the department. During his retirement he enjoys working on their house and spending time with family. Harold Messingham Memorial Scholarship Requirements: Must be a declared Construction Management major entering junior or senior year of study and have a GPA of 2.5 or better. Harold Messingham served the Northeast Iowa construction industry for over 50 years as a plastering contractor. He was a true craftsman of his trade. John Deere Process Mfg. GRADUATE Scholarship Requirements: Graduate student in the Industrial Technology program with regular admission status and have regular approved program of study (GF-1Form). The student must have a minimum of 9 credit hours completed required coursework and have a minimum of 3.2 GPA in required coursework excluding transfer classes. Willis and Hazel Wagner Scholarship Requirements: A declared major in the Department of Industrial Technology with a minimum of 12 SH completed at UNI by the deadline for completing the application. A minimum of 2.75 cumulative GPA and 3.0 major GPA is required. All majors in the Department of Industrial Technology are eligible to apply, with preference to some awards given to Technology Education Majors. The application must be accompanied with a 2 page (maximum) paper identifying your background, activities, (during school, summer, work experience, etc.) and why you are deserving of a scholarship. Willis Wagner was a long time faculty member in the department with a specialization in woodworking. He is very successful as an author of Modern Woodworking and Modern Carpentry, in addition to other textbooks. Willis’s wife Hazel was a great supporter during his years of teaching and especially when he was writing his books. In his retirement Willis continues to keep the textbooks updated and he enjoys writing and flying his airplane. Interstates Electric & Engineering Scholarship Requirements: Must be a student completing sophomore or junior year, enrolled as a major in Construction Management in Industrial Technology, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrating a special aptitude and potential for a career in Construction Management. Interstates Electric and Engineering is a true design-build electrical contractor specializing in industrial electrical installations, instrumentation and control automation throughout the U.S. Headquartered in Sioux Center, IA, Interstates also has regional offices in Indiana, Washington State and Nebraska. As a premiere provider of electrical services, Interstates Co. partners with various educational institutions to build the technical workforce the industry relies on. Robert Lindgren Memorial Requirements: Must be a declared Construction Management major entering junior or senior year of study and have a GPA of 2.5 or better. Robert Lindgren was involved in the glass and glazing business for over 30 years, serving the state of Iowa. His business, Lindgren Glass Products, remains the premier glass subcontractor in the Cedar Valley. Pioneer Graphics Scholarship Requirements: ANY DECLARED Graphic Communication major in the Department of Industrial Technology. Must submit a general scholarship application to the scholarship committee. Applications will be reviewed and sent to the interview committee. There will be an interview process for the determination of which applicant receives the scholarship. JELD-WEN Scholarship Requirements: Must be an enrolled as a full-time student (12 credit hours or more) and must be a sophomore, junior, or senior who is a declared major in Technology Management, Manufacturing: Automation and Production, or Manufacturing: Design. The recipients must have a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative grade point average. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need. The candidates must be from one of the following communities in Iowa where Jeld-Wen offices are located: Des Moines, Dubuque, or Grinnell. Should no qualified candidates from any of these communities be identified, then other candidates from the State of Iowa or neighboring states will be considered. Conlon Construction Scholarship Requirements: Must be a construction management major in the Department of Industrial Technology and enrolled full-time (12 credit hours of more), with preference given to a student in his/her junior year with 60 credit hours or more. The recipient shall be an active member of the UNI Construction Management club and have a minimum overall GPA of 2.75 and 3.0 GPA within the major. Also, the recipient shall be a high school graduate from the local Dubuque Tri-State area. Financial aid will be taken into consideration when selecting an applicant. All students interested in applying for this scholarship must fill out an application and type a essay about “How do you envision your involvement in the construction industry and how have your experiences and education helped shape that vision?” The essay should be no longer than one page. Conlon Construction Co., a third generation construction company, specializes in general construction, construction management, and design-build services. In celebration of its 100th year in business, Conlon Co. established the Conlon Construction Co. Endowed Scholarship Fund. Martin Marietta Scholarship Requirements: The recipient must be an undergraduate student at the University of Northern Iowa and a declared major in the Construction Management program. The recipient shall demonstrate financial need for this award. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be a resident of Iowa, and demonstrates broad academic interests through extracurricular activities (especially those related to construction) and leadership qualities. Iowa Chapter, National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) Requirements: Must be a student completing sophomore or junior year, enrolled as a major in Construction Management, and be in good standing in the major (min GPA 2.5). Scholarship applicants must display an interest in the electrical construction industry and have plans to work in the state of Iowa after graduation. The Iowa Chapter, National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) is a statewide trade association that has been representing, promoting and advancing the interests of the electrical contracting industry since 1901. NECA has worked to develop, maintain and improve the quality of electrical construction at all levels to give the public the benefits of quality electrical contracting services that are based on smart management and construction techniques meeting the highest standards. There are member-contractors represented in eight (8) divisions statewide, including the following areas: Cedar Rapids/Iowa City, Des Moines, Dubuque, Fort Dodge, Ottumwa, Sioux City, Southeast Iowa and Waterloo/Cedar Falls. Clarence & Carol Letson Requirements: Annual base tuition scholarship to student studying Industrial Technology major; preference to incoming freshmen male students; must demonstrate financial need. John Deere Achievement/Diversity Undergraduate Scholarship John Deere has granted the University of Northern Iowa’s Department of Industrial Technology two $3,000 scholarships. One $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to a declared Manufacturing Technology student. One $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to a declared EIET student. Criteria for scholarship: Must be a student completing sophomore or junior year, a declared major in EIET or Manufacturing, be in good standing in the major (minimum major GPA: 3.00), and have two to four semesters remaining until graduation after spring 2007. Scholarship applicants must have plans to work in the state of Iowa after graduation. John Deere has granted the University of Northern Iowa’s Department of Industrial Technology one $4,000 scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to a minority/underrepresented student declared within Manufacturing Technology or EIET. Criteria for scholarship: Must be a student completing sophomore or junior year, a declared major in EIET or Manufacturing, be in good standing in the major (minimum major GPA: 3.00), exhibit minority/underrepresented status, and have two to four semesters remaining until graduation after spring 2008. Scholarship applicants must have plans to work in the state of Iowa after graduation.
