Electrical & Information Engineering Technology (EIET)
Iowa’s first 4-year Engineering Technology Program,
which may provide upto 65 hours of transfer credits from Iowa Community Colleges
including Electronics, Computer, Robotics, Networking Technology, and Electromechanical
Engineering Technology Programs.
Major: BS Degree in Electrical & Information
Engineering Technology
Minor: Electrical/Electronics Technology (EET)
EIET Program Mission
The mission of the EIET program at the University of Northern Iowa is to
provide quality, hands-on and application oriented education that produces
professionals who will contribute to the advancement of engineering technology
in the areas of conventional and renewable electrical power, analog/digital
electronics, industrial control systems, microcomputers, instrumentation,
telecommunication and networking.
Program Description
The EIET Program is a four-year undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor
of Science Degree in Electrical and Information Engineering Technology
area. The major prepares students for application oriented engineering
technology careers in conventional and renewable electrical power, analog/digital
electronics, microcomputer, telecommunications, and networking areas; also
covered are mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system controls. The
program begins with a base of introductory classes in math, physics, and
computer programming and continues on into practical engineering applications
of EIET in industrial settings. In addition to the advanced level technical
classes with computer simulations, the program is strongly hands-on oriented
and includes numerous labs and project experiences.
Program Goals
- EIET will serve for the proposed Network Information
Systems (BS in NIS) and Software Engineering (BS in SE) majors as beginning
Fall 2004. (Courses needed by these new majors : 330:037, 330:039(new),
330:041, 330:042, 330:152, 330:156, 330:103, 330:104)
- EIET Program targets to update all existing Articulation
Agreements with Iowa Community Colleges
- EIET will continue to serve Computer Science, Physics,
Technology Education, Technology Management, Construction Management,
and Manufacturing Technology majors to offer power technology, circuits,
introductory analog/digital electronics, fluid power, electrical power and
machinery, PLCs courses.
- Senior Design Projects have been always very successful
to advertise department and college as well as help recruitment in Iowa.
- A very important future employment opportunity, Solar
and Wind Power Technology, has been included in the curriculum.
- Include Fuel-Cell Technology and Applications as
part of EIET Curriculum (must be done in near future!)
- Continue to develop strong industry collaboration
in all possible ways (senior design projects, IEEE Seminars, guest speakers,
etc.)
- EIET faculty is now serving as advisor and graduate
committee member(s) in Environmental/ Technology programs.
- Apply for the ABET accreditation as earliest as possible.
Unique Program Features
- A friendly environment where you interact on a daily
and personal basis with your professors.
- A flexible program offering a wide variety of options
and emphases with sufficient rigor to prepare for a productive career in
the EIET area.
- Individualized hands-on training on state-of-the-art
equipment and trainers used in industry.
- Small class sizes make the difference.
- Iowa’s first 4-year BS degree granting Engineering
Technology program.
- Excellent part-time job opportunities for EIET juniors
and seniors in local industries.
- Articulation agreements with Iowa Community
Colleges which may provide transfer credits up to 65 semester hours.
- Several annual competitive scholarships
- Program Industrial Advisory Board in addition
to the Department of Industrial Technology Advisory Board
- IEEE active student organization for great leaderships
skills and, also other departmental professional organization chapters
- Opportunities for local industry sponsored senior
design projects and part-time jobs
- Dedicated departmental student computer labs with
continuously updated new software tools
Scholarships
Several full-tuition industrial technology scholarships are available to
incoming freshmen on a competitive basis through the College of Natural Sciences
Mathematics, Science and Technology Symposium. Other departmental and college
level scholarships include; W&H Wagner Scholarship, J.P.LaRue, W.E. Luck,
Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (CEMS) Scholarships, Students
First Scholarship, etc.
Electrical/Electronics Technology Minor (EET)
This minor is intended to provide knowledge and hands-on skills in Electrical
and Electronics Technology. Computer Science, Physics, Technology Education,
Technology Management, Manufacturing Technology, Business and many
others would be some of the majors that could fit well with the EET
minor.
