Iowa Governor’s Day Model United Nations Symposium 2002

 

 

Resolution:  What should the United States position in the United Nations be on the topic of contagious diseases?


Perambulatory Phrases:

ACKNOWLEGING that diseases that are relatively harmless in developed nations often have severe repercussions in third world countries due to lack of adequate medical treatment and immunization, and

GRIEVED that insufficient policies are prevalent regarding the containment of contagious diseases, and

RECOGNIZING that currently there is not enough funding to educate civilians or proliferate technology in developing nations, and

RECOGNIZING that well thought out policies are sometimes ineffective for various reasons, including lack of compliances and lack of political support, and

ACKNOWLEGING that there are diseases for which there has not yet been  a cure, such as HIV/AIDS, new strains of previously suppressed diseases pose a threat to all countries, and

BEARING IN MIND that in such a globalized world where conditions are optimal for the spread of diseases, most nations do not have the capabilities for fast recognition and diagnosis of new disease, and

CONCERNED with the abuse of antibiotics by both humans and agricultural uses, and

RECOGNIZING that contagious diseases are commonly defined as any pathogens that are transmissible by direct or indirect contact, and

RECOGNIZING that communication between nations is vital to the treatment and prevention of contagious diseases, and

RECOGNIZING that bio-terrorism is a threat to all third world and developed nations, and

ACKNOWLEGING that cultural and socioeconomic conditions affect disease prevention and control, and

 


Actuating Phrases:

 

AUTHORIZE the creation of a monitoring system to track transportation and the spread of diseases which will make the reporting of diseases more accessible, and

ENCOURAGES nations to contribute funds, but not limited to, monetary, vaccines, and/or other related supplies, and

ENDORSES the sharing of medical technology to help treat and prevent contagious disease, and

EXPRESSES its belief that there is a need to bring down the cost of medicine in order to make them more available to the people of all nations, and

ENCOURAGES member nation to educate the public on emerging and currently existing diseases and their treatment and prevention, and

STRONGLY ENCOURAGES communication between nations including the opinions of the public, government, and all factions within about disease prevention and containment, and

ENCOURAGES that member nations support the Alliance Against Infectious Diseases in its mission to develop adequate surveillance, prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment of contagious diseases.
