2010-'11 IMPACT Program

The IMPACT program will include:

  • GLOBE activities
  • STORM activities
  • Inquiry Activities
  • Educational Technology activities
  • 2 week Summer Institute at UNI - July 18-23 and July 26-30 (2010-'11 - elementary teachers)
  • Follow-up activities during the school year (ICN, online and face to face)
  • Teacher stipend
  • Graduate credit and/or staff development credit available
  • Earth Science endorsement credit available
  • 3 year grant program - High School first year (2009-'10); Elementary second year (2010-'11); Middle School third year (2011-'12)

The IMPACT Program is:

  • Correlated with Iowa Core Curriculum

Since August 2000, the Science Center for Teaching, Outreach, and Research on Meteorology (The STORM Project) has been actively engaged in

 

  • Curriculum Development
    • 20 classroom activities that engage student interest by using current weather information
    • Real time weather imagery available online
    • Field tested by over 170 teachers in 20 states
    • Designed to meet National Science Education Standards and Benchmarks for Science Literacy

 

  • Teacher Training
    • 2-hour graduate credit course “Studies in Weather Analysis and Forecasting for Science Educators” has been provided to over 60 educators at no cost during the past 2 summers
    • Professional development workshops have been held at professional society meetings across the country

GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is a worldwide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based education and science program. The GLOBE program has been active at UNI since 1999.

 GLOBE is a World Wide Network:

  • 100 countries;

  • 15,000 schools;

  • Students work with research scientists;

  • Students and scientists work together to study the global environment.

 GLOBE Integrates Science, Math and Technology:

  • Students learn about the environment by participating in a scientific endeavor;

  • Students learn to use technology in meaningful and appropriate ways;

  • Students practice science and math skills to answer questions about their world.

Educational technology training will be intermixed as appropriate to specific STORM and/or GLOBE concepts throughout the two-week Institute. You’ll integrate those new skills into your STORM and GLOBE lessons. ITS-Educational Technology’s support staff and STORM & GLOBE leaders will join forces to work side by side with you on your projects. Work with a team of your colleagues or individually! By the end of the two-week Institute you can have complete courseware* elements for delivering instruction via a variety of methods (presentation, web, CD-ROM, DVD, videotape, etc.).

*Courseware is multimedia enhanced, computer assisted learning material, developed by content experts, used to present or supplement presentation of an academic course.

What technology skills will you learn during the Summer Institute?

  • Presentation Development - Participants will learn how to develop a presentation incorporating bulleted lists, graphics, sound and video clips. (Tool used: MS PowerPoint)
  • Data Collection & Analysis - Participants will learn how to organize and record data in a spreadsheet. In addition, you will learn how to chart and graph the data to assist with data analysis and interpretation. (Tool used: MS Excel)
  • Web Page Development - Participants will learn the basics of how to create a simple web page incorporating both text and graphics.
  • Using Webquests to Maximize Student Time on the Web - Participants will learn the basic components of a Webquest. You will also use a template to create a Webquest. Resources will be shared for accessing numerous Webquests already available on the Web.
  • Evaluating Web Sites - Participants will develop a strategy for evaluating web sites. You will discuss key questions to ask to determine the credibility and quality of a web site. In addition, you will practice using the strategy in a collaborative environment to evaluate instructor selected sites and share your conclusions with the large group.
  • Creating Digital Videos  - Participants will learn the basics of editing video digitally. (Tool used: Windows MovieMaker)
  • Tips and Techniques for Video and Photography - Participants will learn a few of the tips and techniques used by professionals in shooting video and photography.
  • Emerging Technologies - Participants will see a demonstration of a number of newer technologies. Presenters will also share implications and applications of these technologies for education.

2010 Summer Workshop Logistics:
  • Weeks of July 18-23 and July 26-30
  • Sunday evening, July 17; 6:30-8:30 pm
  • 8 am - 5 pm; Monday-Friday
  • Optional lab nights and social events some evenings
  • Held on the UNI campus

Workshop Expenses:

  • Food and lodging provided in UNI facilities
  • Reimbursement for travel expenses
  • Workshop materials covered by grant funds

Participant Stipend:

  • Summer workshop and professional development during the school year will result in a potential of $1300 stipend per participating teacher.

Graduate/AEA credit:

  • 3 graduate or 6 AEA recertification credits are available; PLEASE NOTE: Credits will be awarded after completing the year-long program in April, 2011.
  • Final report due in April, 2011
  • Grades available in June, 2011.

How IMPACT can be interdisciplinary...

While GLOBE and STORM are primarily science and math-based programs, the concepts presented thru the IMPACT program involve skills that can be applied across all disciplines. The IMPACT Summer Institute will focus on real-world applications that will include researching techniques, data analysis, reasoning processes, communications, applications of educational technology and much more! Program coordinators as well as fellow participants will assist you in applying IMPACT concepts to your discipline.

IMPACT participants will be guided by the scientific inquiry method - a method that may be used in every area of living. The steps in that process include:

  • making observations
  • asking questions
  • developing hypotheses
  • collecting and organizing data
  • analyzing data
  • developing conclusions
  • communicating the results
  • asking more questions and continuing the cycle

Examples of topics, skills and disciplines other than math and science where this process has been applied include:

  • financial planning
  • preventative medicine
  • social impacts
  • environmental issues
  • reading comprehension
  • problem solving
  • writing across the discipline
  • So you see, you're only limited by your imagination!

The NCLB - Title II Programs combines the "Improving Teacher Quality State Grant Program" (Title IIA) & the "Math and Science Partnerships Program (Title IIB) programs. The program is administered through the Iowa Board of Regents and the Iowa Department of Education and is designed to be coordinated through higher education institutions FOR PreK-12 schools.
