Important People of World War II


Adolf Hitler

Adolf Hitler was the leader of Germany when World War II began.  During most of the war he lived underground in a concrete shelter at his headquarters in East Prussia.  It was here that Hitler controlled the German war effort.  Hitler was extremely successful at the beginning of the war, defeating many countries and people became convinced that he was a military genius.




Franklin D. Roosevelt

Franklin D. Roosevelt was the President of the United States when Pearl Harbor was attacked and when we became involved in World War II.   He died in April of 1945 and Vice President Harry Truman took over office as the 33rd President of the United States.




Harry Truman

Harry Truman was the Vice President when Pearl Harbor was attacked and we became involved in World War II.  He took over office as the 33rd President of the United States in April of 1945 when President Roosevelt died.  Truman was the President when the war came to an end.




General Hideki Tojo

General Hideki Tojo was the prime minister of Japan from October of 1941 to July of 1944. Tojo was an aggressive army General and became minister of war in July of 1941. After he attempted to improve Japan’s relations with the US and failed, he ordered to go to war and the attack of Pearl Harbor. Tojo resigned from his position when he came to the realization that Japan was going to lose the war. Once the war came to an end, Tojo was executed for his responsibility to Japan's war crimes.




Josef  Stalin

Josef Stalin
, was the de facto leader and dictator of the Soviet Union from about 1928 to his death in 1953. Stalin held the title General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1922-1953), a position that did not originally have significant influence, but through Stalin's ascendancy, became that of party leader. Between 1934 and 1953 that position was, nominally, just one of several Central Committee Secretaries, but his leadership was universally acknowledged.

Benito Mussolini

Benito Mussolini was the prime minister of Italy from 1922 until his overthrow in 1943.  He formed the Fascist party, whose ideology, Fascism, called for a one-party state, total obedience, patriotic nationalism, and aggressive militarism.  Mussolini was a close ally of German dictator Adolf Hitler. Mussolini entered the war in June of 1940 on the side of Nazi Germany. In 1943 the Allies invaded Italy and in April of 1945 Communist Resistance units executed Mussolini.



Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill
 was an English statesman and author, best known as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the Second World War. Well-known as an orator, strategist, and politician, Churchill was one of the most important leaders in modern British and world history. He won the 1953 Nobel Prize in Literature for his many books on English and world history. Sir Winston Churchill was voted the greatest-ever Briton in the 2002 BBC poll the 100 Greatest Britons(From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_Churchill)
