Honors Contract

Contracting provides students with the opportunity to earn Honors credit in non-Honors courses.  Credit is based on the fulfillment of a written contract between student and professor that outlines an enhanced learning experience above and beyond normal course requirements.  Contracting is approved on a case-by-case basis, and there are restrictions on the number of Honors credits you can contract.

Independent Study

Honors students can design an independent study for Honors credit.  The project is supervised by an advisor and can be taken for 1-3 hours of credit in a semester.  The purpose of independent study is to provide students with an opportunity to participate in an educational experience beyond what is typically offered in the classroom.  Students must be prepared to exercise a great deal of independent initiative in pursuing such studies.

Thesis/Project Guidelines

The Honors Thesis/Project is the final step towards earning a University Honors designation from the University of Northern Iowa.  The thesis/project gives Honors students the opportunity to explore a scholarly area of interest with the guidance of a faculty member.  It is intended to serve as the culmination of the Honors experience.

Nadyne Harris Scholarship for Honors Research

This scholarship provides funding to students in the University Honors Program who are completing the Honors Thesis/Project.  Funding is awarded to offset costs related to the Thesis/Project, such as supplies, specialized software, photocopying, printing, mailing, photography, and travel to research sites.

Nadyne Harris Scholarship for Honors Travel

This scholarship provides funding to students in the University Honors Program who are traveling for academic purposes.  Examples of academic travel include National Student Exchange and any variety of study abroad programs.  The travel must result in earned academic credit accepted by the University of Northern Iowa and designated for Honors credit by the University Honors Program.

Faculty Guide for Teaching in Honors

The University Honors Program at UNI encourages motivated and interested students to make the most of their collegiate experience.  The program offers challenging classroom experiences, interaction with faculty, and social connections with other capable students.  Students in the program represent all five undergraduate colleges and membership is compatible with any of the University’s 120 majors.
